Campy Clarification
I get confused about the dating and ranking of Campy groups that I find on bikes for sale. I have looked on timeline historical websites and find the information confusing, incomplete, or inconsistent. Could I get some info to clear the air on the dating and ranking of record, super record, nuovo record, c-record, super nuovo record, etc. Any links to sites would be appreciated, but I'm not looking for a simple timeline that doesn't address quality, I am interested in knowing which is higher respected for quality, value, performance, etc. It seems to run together and I have trouble distinguishing the good from the better from the best. Thanks for any info or assistance!

Record is Best whether it be original record, super or nuovo or C-record or post c-record, before record Gran Sport was best. You have basically summed up the current situation of information on the internet.
I am assuming you have been to the campy only timeline as it is the only real time line I can think of. Studying campy is like doing your history, you could take a year long course on it and you wouldn't know everything tons of stuff isn't document, catalog drawings and photos are often outdated. Luckily you have found the best resource on the net... This forum. ask here when you need to ID something and we can help. Velobase is up and coming http://www.velobase.com/ here WERE more catalogs http://www.tuttocampybici.com/catalogs.php the site has been down for quite some time. And of course you know http://www.campyonly.com/history.html |
Some of the problem is that groups overlapped others and were superceeded by new groups as they came out. For example:
Campagnolo Nuovo Record was the top dog through the late 60's up through the mid 70's. Super Record was introduced in the mid 70's and at least some consider this a 'better' group. Nuovo Record production was ended in the mid-80's about the time that C-Record that came out and thus became the new 'top dog' in Campy's line up. Super Record continued to be produced several years after the introduction of C-Record (aka Corsa Record). And that's just the Record line. Mix in the multiple generations of Gran Sport (which was THE Campagnolo group before Record), Nuovo Gran Sport, etc etc etc. And as cyclotoine says you could take a year's course on Campagnolo history and still not have all the small details looked at in any detail. |
