Barcon shifter installation.

I am almost ready to install a set of Suntour barcons but looking at pictures only goes so far.
Is there a site that shows the location of the cables and where the cables should exit the bar wrap?
Or tips about the install?

my only tip: turn the Allen bolt CCW to tighten (CW to loosen) the expander plugs.
There are 2 popular styles for routing the cables, you have to choose the one you like for yourself

I always set mine up with the cable casing following the flat of the bar drops, then do my final location (scotch) taping where the bar starts to curve upwards. After that, I allow the casing to find its own path along the downtube until it ends at the bolt on bracket. I've seen the casings run aero style (hell, we were doing that back in 1972!), but I prefer to keep the casings out in the air to lessen the chance of casing stiction. Handlebar tape is then applied in the usual manner, wrapping over the cable casing starting at the outermost scotch tape point.

Remember to leave just a little of the casing going beyond the bar end, as I'm assuming that your barcon is recessed for the casing.

I always install the shifters, set the cable length, tape the cables to the bar, then wrap. Never thought of wrapping first? Interesting. Where the cable exits the wrap is personal preference. Myself, I cannot deal with the lump to the inside of the brake levers, so I have mine coming out just past the upward curve of the
drop.,,,,BD

Here's another visual for you:

I can't seem to find it now, but there was a pretty lengthy thread on BF a while ago debating the merits of traditional vs. hidden routing. I think the consensus was that either worked equally well, but there were lots of nice pics of routing options.

Mine is about 1 to 1 1/2 wrap widths up from the ones on yours. It made the cable housing line up almost perfectly with the downtube as it went down to the cable stop. Looks good either way, it just appealed to me at the moment of wrapping. Gorgeous bike BTW!!,,,,,BD

I don't ride in the drops much, but when I do my thumbs just fit between the cables and hoods in this setup without being bugged by the cable...

They're a bit too high on this one...

While we're talking bar con installation...how does everyone finish taping at the barcon end of the bars?

I have mine taped off with finishing tape, but it looks quite ugly.

I wrap from the stem and stuff the end of the tape into the bar end before installing the barcons. Works even with the thick elkhide wraps in my post above, though it is a tight fit.

^^^That was my first inclination, but I'm having a hard time imagining how one does that and still gets the cable/housing right. Maybe I just need to try it.

I route mine pretty much the same as JunkYardBike and Bikedued, but I loop the cables over my retro cylindrical Bellwether handlebar bag.

This is a timely thread, as I am about to install my first barcons.

I will probably go aero, (just received my Jagwire slick stainless tandem length inners) and then wrap as usual.

For me "usual" is to start at the end and work toward the stem. However, I don't usually start without any overlap to tuck into the bar (or cut)... I start at the bar end the way that people usually start when they start at the stem, with a small piece of tape and a full wrap before I start spiraling up. It leaves the tape slightly thicker at the end of the bar, and this hasn't bothered me yet... We'll see what happens with barcons.

I use whatever cork tape is handy, and plan to run the shifter cable right along my brake cable, although I am not quite sure how I will "transition" the cable from the drops to the tops...

I am among those who usually ride on the hoods.

Speaking of which... I have considered chopping about an inch off the end of my bars... the reason is that when I do ride in the drops, I always have my hands forward, and usually have about 1.5 inches of bar sticking out the back. Has anyone tried this, a general answer is fine, but what about specifically with a barcon setup?

Test fit the barcons and cable housings, tape the cables where you want them, remove barcons then wrap. Piece of cake.

I start at the shifters, with them installed already. If you do it just right, you can't even tell it's not tucked in. If you do the first wrap tightly, they will be problem free just like starting at the top. If you use electrical tape, some auto parts stores sell a multi color pack. On the grey Trek above, I used a wrap or so of yellow, then red, then went over the top with black. Makes for a nice border, or at least I think so,,,,BD
