Austro-Daimler Inter 10
 

Hi all, first post here. New to road biking in general and I have been looking around for an old frameset to build up into a singlespeed/fixed. I have been SS moutainbiking for many years and decided to add in some road miles for commuting.

Anyway, I just picked up a thrift store bike with nice lines and a light frameset. It was painted several times over the original coat and when I started stripping things down I found that it was an Austro-Daimler and I believe it was an Inter 10 (underneath the paint I found the letters 'Inte' on the top tube) with at least partial 531 tubeset.

When I finally stripped all the paint off I found some cool things such as the letters AD seemingly brazed onto the seatstay. Also the seat/chainstays where originally chromed and when I got all the paint off, they look brand new, not a spec of rust (including the shimano SF dropouts).

I have found a few references to the Inter 10 online, but most A-D discussions focus on the Ultima or Vent Noir. Does anyone have any info on this model and possibly finding the year given the serial # 5728113?

The integral derailleur hanger (please do not saw it off, because the next owner may actually like gears,as I do) is generally a sign of at least a mid-level frame, as is the half-chromed rear triangle. You can often estimate frame quality from the required seatpost diameter, e.g., many butted Reynolds 531 frames with standard 28.6mm outer diameters take 27.2mm seatposts.

I promise... I don't like altering frames if I don't need to. I wish I didn't have to strip it down and remove the paint, but the multiple rattlecan paint jobs needed to go.

The only A-D bike which I know of with a name including "Inte" was indeed the Inter 10. By 1982 the Inter 10 was all-531 (meaning not just the main tubes, but forks and stays too), listed in the '82 catalogue just as a frameset and not as a full built-up bike. The '82 catalogue specifies Gipiemme drops, so I'm **guessing** that yours is an earlier model, because it's listed as a complete bike in the 1976 catalogue with Shimano drops. Also, it looks like your frame doesn't have brake cable braze-ons on the top tube, which puts it earlier than 1982. I've don't think anyone here has ever tried to decipher the A-D serial numbering system.

I've got an A-D Starleicht from 1982, and it's my #1 ... a great bike.

That's quite a find. Build it up and treasure it.

I had an Inter-10 that I believe was mid 70s judging by the components. Like yours, the only 'braze-on' was the integral dérailleur hanger, it was built with Shimano SF dropouts, and it had the same half-chrome treatment. It was full double-butted 531 (main tubes, stays and forks), the seatpost was 27.2, and the BB shell was English thread. The s/n on mine was 5604521.

Wow, sounds like your describing the exact frame that I have (except for serial of course). What I don't understand is why the letters 'AD' were filled in. If I hadn't stripped the paint off, I would have never know it was there. I have seen pictures of many Austro Daimler bikes that have that same 'AD' at the top of the seatstay, but they appear to be recessed so the letters can be painted.

Here are some photos for reference. You are right about the recessed AD on the stay caps. Unfortunately, the paint on mine was in woeful condition - a shame, as the original pinstriping and lug accents were quite attractive.

my stepfather has an AD identical to the one featured above... except that his has been meticulously well-kept... I was just there the other day, I'll try to take some photos next time.

I can only add that I think you'll be very pleased with the ride or your Inter 10. This, as with most of the A-D bikes, has a bit longer-than-average top tube. It makes for a better fit with those who are long-torso-ed, but in any case provides a very stable ride. I'm always interested to note that A-D was one of the very first manufacturers in Europe (as well as the world) to spec Shimano forged dropouts, and the inter 10s had them back in '76 or so (correct this bit of trivia if you know better) but didn't spec Shimano components until later. My Inter 10 had Huret Titanium FD and RD and a Stronglight crank and BB with Shimmy dropouts. The metallic Maroon paint is *very* typical.

I found one for my girlfriend that is identical to JunkYardBikes pictures only hers was NOS and very clean and original. I have two Inter 10's not as nice but great riders, one set up as a single speed and the other updated with 700 wheels and 7-speed ultegra with centerpulls. Why is the stuff I find for her always nicer than my stuff? AD's are superb bikes.

I was just given an AD inter 10 last night. It's in pretty sharp condition, though it needs to be repainted. I love the original color, so I think I'll keep it the same. Anyone know where I can find AD decals to put on after the paintjob? It's all shimano 600 comoponents from what I can see, though it's missing the front deraileur. I just put a bid on one on ebay, so with a new paintjob, new decals, new cables, and a lot of polishing I think I'll have a great rehabbed bike. I would appreciate any suggestions.
