DFW-Raleigh 3 Speed
I have a 1974 Raleigh Sport, in very good condition, I would like to find a shop or person in the Dallas/Fort Worth are that has experience working on these bikes. I was at one bike shop and mentioned Sturmery-Archer and all I had was blank stares. I must be older than I thought. :)

Are you sure you don't want to try it on your own?I'm sure there's enough people here with experience that could talk you through it.
Is there a problem with the hub? |
howdy tex- i have three raleigh sports and have taken them to trinity in irving for alloy rims etc. joey knows his way around three speeds and if he doesn't, he can call me... the hub isn't very difficult, all of mine ever need is a good cleaning and some oil on occasion. old raleighs are great bikes and you're right, most of the bike shops want nothing to do with them.

The problem with most shops is that most of the mechanics are not old enough or experienced enough to know how an SA hub works and if there is a problem, it may be unlikely that they stock the right parts.
Thankfully, old SA hubs rarely need anything more than fresh oil and some adjustments to the shifting system and the rest of the bikes are pretty straightforward when it comes to servicing. They are the Timex of bikes... they just keep ticking and ticking and ticking. As always, check Sheldon "we really miss you" Brown's site for all the information you could ever want on old Raleigh bikes and Sturmey Archer hubs. |
Thanks
I'm not even home at the moment, I'm sitting in a hotel in Boston, and don't get home for another week, I bought the bicycle from the internet, and I have not even seen it yet in person. It was semi disassembled for shipping, All I've seen are pictures sent to me from home.
I would like some more information on this Trinity? is that a shop/store/ or ...??? I've been looking for awhile on the ebay and Craig's list, passed on a few bicycles and then this one popped up, so I bought it. I'm planning on keeping it as a Go to Starbucks bike. I have been reading Sheldon Brown's pages for the last 6 months, and it's weird, I'm here in Boston close by and now this wealth of knowledge is gone.... |

The hardest thing about the SA is getting the cable tension set correctly. After a bit of trial and error, you'll get it. Bad thing is, if it's not right, the gears will shift on their own and always to the high gear. Like when you're on a hill and really need first gear but SA decides to go to third instead and all of a sudden you're trying not to fall over as you manhandle 86 gear inches up an 8% grade.

Check with the Bicycle Exchange in downtown Carrollton, Tx. Richardson Bike Mart might have some older techs that have knowledge in that area as well. PM Lotek, he knows the older wrenches there better than I do.

hey tex- you're not far from trinity at all. yeah, it's a small shop in irving-
Trinity Bicycles 437 E. Pioneer Dr. #160 Irving, TX 75061 972.721.7090 p 972.721.7050 f trinitybicycles.com for some reason their site is down, but joey runs the place. he built up one of my sports that i got on craigslist and was in much smaller pieces than yours. trinity deals in steel frame stuff, not vintage usually, but they've been very accommodating for my odd tastes. i've had my raleigh twenty in there, an international, three sports and a few other bikes. pm me if you have questions about trinity or your sports. great color btw... i don't have a yellow one. yet. |
I ended up going to the Bicycle Exchange, what a great shop, they appeared to have washed and cleaned the Raleigh up, very nicely, I'm looking for another one now, I'd like one just a little bit bigger in the frame.
