Age of Dawes Galaxy
I posted this bike on here a while ago, and found from the derailleurs which i believe[d] to be original, that it was a 1989 Galaxy.

If anyone has any ideas to the age, or other ways to find out, these would be appreciated (BTW, the Aero levers and bars aren't original.) Thanks in advance, Jack |
Got a shot of the head badge? My best guess would be mid to late 80's based on the style of paint job and the braze-ons.

Nutted brakes. Not much slope on the fork crown, I'd say end of the '70s or may very early '80s.

No, its a 6 speed, don't know if this was original though, but was what it had when I got the bike, so this is what I replaced it with.

That style of Reynolds decals came into use circa 1982/1983, so presumibly, it is no earlier than that. The nutted brakes and lack of shifter braze-ons suggest it would not be much more modern, so my guess would be mid-1980s. In which case, the hubs would appear to be original and the bicycle is probably a 1983 or 1984 model. I'd say the derailleurs are replacements, but the shift levers are original.
FYI, I just happen to have the 1984 Galaxy specs and for the most part, they appear to match: 531 main tubes, SunTour VX derailleurs, SR Custom crankset, Weinmann centre-pull brakes, Maillard hubs laced to Weinmann rims. Original price $299 US. Advertised weight 26 lbs. |
The 1984 Dawes catalogue was still listing the Galaxy as 5 speed. But from the late '70s a lot of people were replacing standard 5 speed with the Suntour Ultra 6 that could fit in the same space.
My Dawes is a replacement frame, sent by Dawes after the original developed a fault. That was sometime round about '84. The new frame has plastic cable guide under the bottom bracket, and is spaced 126mm at the back so would take a standard 6 speed. The original 1980 (or earlier) frame had cable stops to take housing under the BB. |
Thanks for all of the replies.
