upgrading the brakes/do I really need to drill my frame?
It seems my frame won't take a recessed bolt. Is there any other option around this? Do they make a good single pivot/dual pivot that bolts on?
Must I order two fronts and drill like the harris cyclery website recommends?

Harris has the 'traditional mount' dual pivots: https://harriscyclery.net/itemdetails.cfm?ID=1006
I found a complete set for $50 last year, but my source no longer has them. Search for "A550" or "A-550" or "RX100" and you may find some. They pop up on ebay occasionally.
Ebay also has plenty of traditional mount single pivots available.

Also, someone (perhaps Problem Solvers?) makes an alternative nut for recessed units that does not a recess. I think it means opening up the hole a smidge, but not much. And it seats on the outside of the fork better than a recessed nut that was not in a recess. Have the LBS go through their QBP catalog, its in there somewhere.
But then, finding a pair of nutted brakes is about as easy as it gets. Just reach your hand into any dark corner of the LBS; you will pull out 6 pairs to choose from.
Or, in some cases, you can switch out the bolts for a nutted bolt.

Try putting the front brake on the back with a hardware store nut and put the back brake on the fork with the smaller rear recessed nut inside the steer tube or get another hardware store nut and put it in the seat tube.
It works!

I haven't tried this myself, but I've read of people making a coupler out of the front bolt nut by cutting off the hex-sided end. Screw that coupler on to the brake bolt and then screw whatever sized bolt fits into the other side, essentially extending the reach of the center bolt.

I wound up mounting a front brake for the rear on an old dale touring frame, but i did drill out the fork to take recess nut for the front brakes.
I used a pair of nashbar long reach brakes.
