I need some help choosing a wheelset.

I aquired a Merida Extreme 903 road series frame awhile back and I am finally getting around to building it up. I don't know much about this bike other than it is made from Tange DB Cromo tubes. I can post pics too if you think it will help. I'm not sure of the year either but probally 90's

I'm trying to gather the parts, but I'm not sure where this bike stands in the heirarchy of bikes. I'd like to properly equipe the frame with something it deserves for the quality of frame it is. I have been looking at Mavic Askiums for a wheel set. I can get a pretty good deal it looks like for last years set. Am I heading down the right road here?

Does anyone have any wheelset suggestions for a frame of this caliber?

Does anyone know anything about this particular frame?

What kind of group would have been found on this baby? I'm guessing japanese stuff...Shimano 105??

I'll cross post this in road too since we are talking 90's here!

I'd say, get open pros laced to ultegra hubs.

And I'd say, get some DT Swiss RR1.1's and lace them to Campy Chorus hubs.

Two votes for the Open Pros laced to Ultegra or even 105 hubs.

Or, Velocity Aeroheads laced to Ultegra hubs. Or those DT Swiss rims laced to Ultegra hubs.

I was trying to keep them in the same price range.

I'd say go to bikesoul.com and buy the S3's. Just a little under 1600 grams. 30mm rims and bladed spokes.

What now?

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm getting a much better response over here than in the road cycling forum!!!

What now you ask? well, I need to get a group. Some of the newer models of this bike have Tiagra, and I happen to have a 105 crank set, so now I just have to fill in the gaps!

they probably want you to get some Zipp 303's, right? That'd be really nice...

I second the campy group. You can get good deals on 8 speed, and the value doesn't disappear like Shimano does.

It depends whether the bike has shimano or campy. You can't use shimano with campy or vice versa, without modification or fudging anyway.

Vuelta Pro Super Lite wheelset Campagnolo 9/10speed New - $250
Vuelta Road Pro SuperLite or Vuelta Road Pro's?

I don't know much about them, but there is a new "Road Pro" set on eBay with a BIN of $179. The "Road Pro SuperLite" wheels have a MSRP of $799, but I'm not sure that's the same wheel set your looking at.

At any rate, they are Campy. Which means you'll need a Campy drive train to go along with them.

Stick with a traditional 32/36 spoke wheelset. They are much easier to deal with when they need truing or if you break a spoke.

Mavic freehubs are not exactly serviceable. The Ultegra/105 is much more service friendly. The Campy suggested is also a fine idea.

Just don't buy into the low spoke BS. It is a fashion trend.

I've heard that from others too, and intuitively what your saying makes sense...
