Tino Sana wooden bike

Hi all,

I have a friend who has a Tino Sana wooden bike mod. 101 for man. It is number 80 something. We have agreed that I am going to buy the bike from him but neither of us have any idea what the second hand value of this bike is. Any help in gaining a rough idea of the value of this bike would be greatly appreciated.

The details for the bike are here...

https://artecultura.netcowork.it/bici...ood-bikes.html

Thanks,

Douglas

Heres a wooden bike with style! If you google "wooden bikes you will find a great variety of sweet looking wooden bikes not all as stylish as this one!

That bike looks like it was heavily influenced by the famous Bowden Spacelander of the 1960's:

Thanks for the interest guys but can I ask...if no one knows how much it is worth can you give your opinion as to how much you think it's worth? If I get enough answers I can then make an offer to my friend based on the general consensus.

Thanks, Douglas

I paid $250 for a one of a kind wood bike a few years back
(partially destroyed by a poor packing job and poor handling
by UPS, cost $500 to get a so-so restoration). I would
start at $250. But I would guess $1000 wouldn't be out of
line. What to they sell for new?

I was going to take a swag and say $2,000 after Googling him and seeing his bikes show up on design sites like designboom.com. But I now wonder if my estimate may be a little on the low side for what is apparently deemed an "art" bike:

Actually, with those wheels, it reminds me more of a Corima that has been outfitted for commuting!

Yes, but that should tell you something about what it likely cost the owner when new. I can tell you that if it's billed as a designer bike and is sold in fairly exclusive stores, its price is going to be disproportionately high with respect to the cost of materials.

This was shown at NAHBS in Portland earlier this month. During construction the frame is split, both halves are hollowed out and saturated with an epoxy coating to maintain constant moisture content, then the two halves are epoxied together forming a hollow monocoque frame. It was pretty impressive.

There have been a number of Tino Sana bikes that have turned up on Italian Ebay over the last 4 years and they have never reached $1000. Being sold as a bike the value is therefore south of 1G. My personal comment is however that it shouldn't really be considered a bike, but rather a work of art, and sold as such in an appropriate marketplace, you should be able to get more money.

BTW, I have seen Sana's bike collection which is quite impressive, much more so than his wooden bikes.

About Tino's bike...

Interesting bike. Does somebody know about the history of this Tino's art bike? I mean some facts, information. Isn't it very strange that there is no info about it in the net? (except a few words....)

Still looking for price

Hi All, 3 years on and I still don't have a price for the bike. Looking at other makers of wooden bikes I estimate it to be worth around 1500 to 2000. Any one come across one for sale or know of someone who may know?

Any help is appreciated,

Douglas

Prices on these can only appreciate every year as their numbers are so limited, plus the fact that wood sounds so "perishable" compared to steel and other metallic materials, gives it that "get it now or lose the chance forever!" flavor to it. I think it could sell for at least 1500 pounds these days to the right buyer/collector.......maybe even more in parts where termites, wood borer beetles and carpenter ants are a problem?

As already mentioned previously, I have seen a few of these sell on Italian ebay as well as on other Italian on-line sales forums. When I first responded to this question 3 years ago the highest price I had ever seen any of them reach was less than $1000. In the last 3 1/2 years I have seen two more sell, with asking prices of 1000 and 1500 euros. The one being offered at 1000 euros disappeared reasonably quickly, so I take that it did sell at close to teh asking price of 1000 euros (today worth $1280). The higher priced one languished for a couple months at 1500 euros with no takers, then was reduced to 1200 euros and still remained for many months, apparently unsold. After about 6 months, the advert disappeared. So in the best of cases, history has shown that at least in the Italian market, these bikes are not worth more than 1200 euros. To therefore contravene the C&V rules and illegitimately offer a bike for sale one does not have teh right to do so is bad enough, but to then offer it for 3 times teh going rate without so much as a photo is totally crass.
