I just picked up a Nishiki yesterday. Wasn't really planning on it it just kind popped up. The colors is what got me actually. I just had to have it. But it seems to be a bit of a mystery as to what it actually is. I can't find what model it would align with.
The serial number is EA100806. So from my understanding it is a European frame, made in 1981 for likely 1982. I am in Canada so it could be a frame that just ended up here. It has full Shimano 600 components, and Ambrosio Elite red annodized wheels. The only parts that have been swapped out are the tires, chain and cables. The paint seems to be original. Where it is flaking off it chips off to bare metal. It is cracked and crazed like a laquor based paint would, and there is no clear coat. Besides being extremely dirty and rough paint it is in decent shape. I plan on stripping it all down and repainting it anyway. I would just have to find the propper decals for it or have them made. Some seem to be missing like the Tange steel decal and the Handcrafted by Kuwamara decal on the chain stay. I have looked up what I could for catalogues but the color and components specs do no line up with anything I can find. Everything from the early 80s seem to have Sun Tour or Campy for the higherend models. And I know with 600 everything this wasn't an entry level bike. Nishiki Backroads Mt bike
Adding a red Nishiki Backroads Mt bike to the database. It has a Suntour XCM drive train. Rear derailer is a Suntour XCM 3040.
Rear freewheel has 6 cogs. I'm guessing a 1988 model. SN is GZ859124. The stem has 1988 stamped on it. Matching red handlebar. Has made in Taiwan sticker. Hubs are Joytech on Araya rims. Vintage Nishiki
I thrifted a near new vintage Nishiki today CI 04800. I can't upload a photo as I'm new. I think it is a Canadian 1979 manufacture number 4800? The model is called "Superbe".
There is an N shaped hole on the bottom under the serial number which seems very crazy to me! |

The frame is Tange Champion 2, Shimano drop outs, randonneur braze ons, "Rinko" fenders and headset, internal cable and wire routing, and amazing, deep burgundy paint. That is a beautiful colour! No idea what the "J" means but the "I" usually means that the year of manufacture of the frame ended in a 9. So maybe 89 or 99? Sorry I'm no real help, gorgeous frame though.

The Kawamura serial number for the Japanese domestic market did not start with a letter for the country. In a sense, it is omitted or assumed to be for Japan. The first letter "J" is for the year of frame manufacture, 1980. Looks like a well maintained frame. Edit: This is a randonneur style frame and this style was not common in North America in 1980. Several other Japanese domestic brands sold this style of bicycle. |

Thank you for the reply and for posting the photo Hummer. Since my initial post I have seen an entire thread dedicated to photos of this style of hole on the bottom of some frames. I am curious why these holes exist? Seems like a point where water would be able to get in, and also seems like it would weaken the integrity of the frame, but clearly neither of these is a concern. Why do some bikes have this feature and not others?

You're not the only one who has wondered. But this is a feature of many high end frames. Usually the cutout features the logo of the maker. There should be a bellows inside to protect the bearings and axle, maybe contain grease. It still does not prevent the inside of the bottom bracket from rusting, but it does let water drain that could come down through the seat tube.

Happy to contribute! Just finished this Nishiki Meridian hybrid earlier this week. Really came out nice, Ishwata tubing, cool fork, tons of tire clearance, neat little details here and there, etc. Looks like “1 1 6450” is stamped on the bottom of the seat tube. There’s nothing on the BB shell.

1977 Nishiki touring FFS
I got this in 1978 for my 13th birthday. I have loved this bike and rode it every day for many, many years. I have been on it as recently as 2 years ago and everything works beautifully. It’s been in my garage. I may sell it, but it was a gift from my dad and hard to part with. Everything is original on it. Apparently, it is the 15.959th of Nishikis manufactured.

There are two different sets numbers stamped around each side of the bottom bracket shell. It appears that the left side is R902400730. This serial number is from The Derby Cycle Corporation, who purchased West Coast Cycle in about 1989. The serial number has an encoded date beginning with the the first digit. 9 - decade 024 - day of the year. 0 - year of the decade. Day 24 of 1990, for the date of the bicycle assembly. The number on the right side is probably the serial number of the frame manufacturer. I cannot see enough of this number to determine the manufacturer. The Derby Cycle Corporation distributed bicycles with several brand names. Derby Cycle purchased frames from various manufacturers. I do not know this as a fact, but I suspect that the frames were sent to the factory in Kent, Washington for assembly and this is where the "R" prefix number was stamped onto the BB shell. 1978 Nishiki Olympic Royale
Bought new in March 1979, it was my daily commuter 1979 - 1981 and 1995 - 2001. It's getting some long overdue maintenance to get it roadworthy.

I know this is an old thread, but I have a bike very simiar to yours. It is blue with no decals exceopt for Made in Japan at basse of seat tube and another at the top of the seat tube double butted chrome molybdanum. the bike is fully chromed and has the same date stamp on the cranks. I think mine has the original seat. it is plastic with a quilted leather cover. Seamless Super Deluxe YFC. The serial number on my bike is K7B03092. Im guessing that the E in your serial nimber is really a B which woould correspond to a manufacture date of 1972. My bike has Dura Ace centerpulls which are original.

I have looked at the pictures in your album. I am a little confused about the serial number. Is it K7B03092 or K7E03092? The frame appears to be a Nishiki Professional from 1972 built by Katakura. From the serial number: K = Katakura manufacturer 7 = Showa year 47. Gregorian year 1972. B = month February or E = Month May. A very nice bicycle. |

Thanks for replying to my post Hummer. I was thinking at the B was referencing the year rather than the month. No doubt you are correct. What seems odd about my bike and the one I referenced was that they did not have any decals and both had the Dura Ace labeled center pulls. Cheers
