I apologize to everyone for multiple replies trying to post pictures. I believe their attached this time. Bike is a Nishiki Prestige. It is a Performance Equipe, 4130 CR-MO triple butted frame, 4130 CR-MO fork. Sunntour Edge Accushift 4050 components. Brakes are Edge, Diamond comp BRS. I found two serial numbers on bike. First is "GM852270." The other (not 100% sure I got it right is "068H12 I'm a MTB rider that has never had a road bike. I picked this up for $100 to see if I like the pavement. Anyone got an idea what this serial number means? Thanks

I have a mystery bike which is completely stripped and completely chrome. The lugging looks very similar to some other Nishiki bikes.

Check the bottom of page one for several closeup pictures of the bike.

KJ 22084. I guess that makes it 1980. 56cm International. Sugino crank, Suntour Cyclone RD, Suntour NSL FD. Shimano hubs, unknown aluminum eyeleted rims.
SR stem and bars. Dia Compe brakes.

Maybe all original except for saddle and the bar tape. The black foam rubber had to be replaced. New tires, the originals had side walls made of dust. I like the matching blue on the crank and seat post.
The 5 speed freewheel looks almost new after grease removal.

Edge was introduced in 1989 and there was no Prestige in the line-up for 1990 or 1991, so I'd say that it's a 1989. Reverse engineering the serial number, my educated guess would be that it was built in the 13th fortnight of 1988 by Giant. That's kind of early for a 1989 model, but it's not unknown.

I think it is unlikely that this is a Nishiki. Of the hundreds of Nishiki serial numbers I've tracked, none have started with a J. The code on the front derailleur would make this a 1978 model, though my guess from the serial number would be 1982. Neither of my 1978 or 1982 Nishiki catalogs show that particular mix of braze-ons or enough chrome to indicate that the frame would be fully chromed underneath the paint. The most salient feature, for me, is the the use of cable stops on the top of the top tube for the rear brake. Nishiki used clips in 1978 and tunnels in 1982. Some of the entry level models had stops on underside of the top tube but I've never seen them on the top, that I recall.

The only serial numbers I recall that start with a J were from Fuji, however the format doesn't quite match. Sorry that I can't be of any help.

I recently purchased a bike that was advertised as a "Classic Nishiki Road Bike." Although I seriously doubt that it is a true "classic," I would still like to find out some info about the bike. All of the stickers have been removed from the frame, so here is all of the information I could find:

Serial Number (located on the seat tube, opposite the drive side): HD90710910

Both Front and Rear Derailleurs are Shimano. The front derailleur has the following code on the inside of the cage plate: NE

I believe that this code on the derailleur corresponds to May, 1989.

I have also attached a picture.

Any info you could pass along would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to figure out what model my Nishiki frame is. However I am unsure if it even is one because the numbers i have collected do not match the format on the database.

On the right side dropout there is a sequence of LM-42928
On the left side from what I can see is 09BB3387

There isnt much original components left, aside from the seatpost and stem which was an SR with the following marking of SR J-87

There isnt anything on the bottom of the frame (BB) as many areas on the frame were shaved (converted to singlespeed)

any help would be appreciated.

Many of the Giant manufactured Nishiki did have the serial stamped on the dropouts, however this does not match their format. Still, a J-87 code would indicate a 1988 model, and that's late enough in the game that there may have been other contract frame manufacturers involved. It's going to be really hard to ID if the braze-ons have been removed. We're definitely to the point where pics will be mandatory.

Sorry, I 've never seen a Nishiki with lugs like those. Regardless, it has stamped dropouts, so it's very low in the lineup.

Hi! I can across this thread researching my inherited Nishiki. All I know is that my uncle bought it in '74 when he graduated high school. Here is the serial number: KS123170. The reason I know the serial number is because the seat and wheels were stolen on campus once, but everything else is original.

Kind of a weird acquisition. The gentleman claims that he only rode it twice, once to the police station to register it back in 1982, and once back. Serial #: CJ 01635

What was this bike worth new?

It's labelled a 'Continental' but I can not really find much info on this particular model with the components it is equipped with.

Any idea if the Canadian models were labelled/branded differently than the US bound versions? And can anyone verify the specifications of this particular bike for me please (the serial number indicates a 1980 model year from what I understand, it was sold on June 3 1982 from a local bike shop, has the painted Nishiki logo on the front etc.). I understand the bikes and frames may have come equipped with different components by the year etc due to overstocking or reasons of the like, but I'd like to find out some more information on this particular model if any of you know what it's about.

Shaggy, the serial number indicates it could be either a 1980 model, or a 1981 manufactured in late 1980. However, I'm pretty sure it is the former. From what I can see, it only has 5 cogs versus the 6 used in 1981. Also, it has has a double chainring versus the triple spec'd in 1981. Finally, it has the old Cyclone derailleur, as opossed the the MK II version introduced for 1981. It could very well have been bought in 1982, as this was a relatively soft period for bicycle sales and it may have been hanging around in the shop for a couple of years.

While I don't have have the 1980 specs, there is no reason to believe that it is not 100% spec. As previously stated, this was a relatively soft period in the market, so availabilty of parts would have been good, with no reason for substitution. Sorry, I don't have period pricing.

Yes, the Canadian models were not snecessarily pec'd the same as the US models. In this case, from what I've seen , the US market did not have a Continental model. It appears to have been uniquely Canadian.

A phot of the tubing decal would be appreciated.

What do you feel a bike like this in 'like new' condition would be worth?

I'd assume that after 27 years of sitting around I would and should completely overhaul all of the lubricant etc. before actually taking the bicycle for an extended ride? Would I be able to do permanent damage to the bearings etc. by not doing so?

Thanks for all the time and effort you have put into these databases. I just bought my first ten speed. It's a Nishiki with an "olympiad" decal, and a produced by american eagle in Japan sticker on it. Please forgive me in advance i am not familiar with the correct jargon yet.It's white with two tone front forks. The gear shifter is a Shimano Super Shifter. The Center of the wheel (hub maybe is the correct term) also says shimano. The brakes are Dia-Compe. I believe the serial Number is.... KS141632. I just bought it today and haven't found the other numbers yet. The Derailer says Thunder Bird, the crank says American Flyer, and the arm that keeps tension on the chain says Shimano Eagle.

I don't know if that information meant anything, but I would like to know all that you know about my bike. I would at least like to figure out what year it is... the S has me a little confused. What can I say... i'm new and i gotta start somewhere.

Hi,

I've had this bike in my attic for a while and finally decided I would use it. It turns out that it is NISHIKI but i can't figure out anything about it from the serial number. The serial is GB714281 which doesn't math the serial numbers on the first post. The only thing I can think of is that it's a combo serial or something meaning it is an '82 Giant. I'd like to know year and how good of a model it is. Also maybe how much it is worth. I live in Boston. I've attached some pictures that hopefully help.
