Bill, I would have recommended that you check the dropouts again, but you know your stuff so it looks like this was not a Giant frame or Giant stopped stamping the dropouts that year.
OK, best I can do is tell you what it's NOT. It's not an 87 or 89 because the downtube decal is wrong. It looks like it might be correct for an 88, but the seat stay decal is missing and the top tube decal is wrong font. Also, in 88 the head should have been painted white, not silver. The shifters should be index for 88, but with the rear DR missing who knows who messed with it so I didn't count that. The paint combination is correct for the 83 Sport, but the decals are not (see my former 83 sport on page 1 of this thread). Sorry I couldn't be of more help. If I had to guess I'd say an 85 +/- 1 year, but that's an educated guess.
EDIT: Did you try the date code on the front DR? Also, the crank on the 88 was a Sugino MP, it looks a lot like the one on your bike.

I got a hold of a nice 1983 - Nishiki- and it turned out to be a quite rare model :
Nishiki Race Master :
Serial EC 101 999

A full Shimano 600EX Arabesque-set etc.

At first we thought it was a Speed Arrow but it has a full cromed fork and partly cromed
rear-stays under that thick " repair "paint.

I know there are a couple of these in Finland , but have you seen this EC-serial number on other models as well in ?

Hi I just joined the site because my father pasted away not to long ago with some of the things that I kept was this bike after looking over the bike decided to try and find out some info about it that's how I found the site anyway here's a picture will try to get more info I know he loved this bike I will always keep it and I have started to ride myself funny thing I worked at a bike shop in Chicago when I was in high School anyway here's a picture will get back with more info

I picked up my first nishiki (and first road bike for that matter) this morning at a garage sale near my house.

I really know nothing and any help/input would be appreciated.

It has some surface rust and the paint is chipped in a few places but overall it seems like it's in fairly good condition. The tires hold air and I rode it around the block a couple times. I plan to use it to commute and just ride around on.


Should I strip the paint and try to get rid of all the rust and repaint it? What should parts should I replace other than the tubes and tires? Are all the parts original?

Sorry so many questions and pictures.

You should add your location to your profile so we know where you're posting from. It's amazing how many people fail to do that. For now I'll assume it's Canada because Shields imported Nishikis before there was Norco. I have a 1977 Shields Nishiki Landau, so yours is probably from around that time.

If you strip it and repaint it, it will lose its original identity, unless you pay an arm and a leg to have repro decals made. It's in remarkably clean and original condition for its age. I would just clean up the rusty spots and touch it up.

Here are a couple of pics of my run of the mill 83 Nishik Century. Does anyone know what they call this color or where my best source for finding something similar would be? I was too anxious and should have taken it by my LBS to investigate the surface rust, instead I did a serious hand sanding job over the worst areas of rust to reveal that the frame is very solid. In the short term I wouldn't mind doing some simple touching up, though I may just wrap the top tube in camo bar tape and put some stickers on the seat tube area.

Presently I don't know if I'm going to keep it as is since I live in NYC having it look beat will make it of less interest to a thieve though part of me may end up giving it a full restore. I think what I do will be determined by just how well the frame actually fits me.

I gave the frame an acid bath a few weeks ago, and have determined that it is definitely a Nishiki.



According to some info I gathered in the other thread, it looks like a Comp II. The part that has me confused is the serial number. It doesn't appear to follow any of the typical Nishiki patterns.





It almost looks like there is a space between the 83 and 869. Could that make it a 1983 model?

Has anybody seen a Nishiki like this before? I'm in Canada btw.

It rides real nice, I replaced the tires but I believe otherwise original.

Super Maxi Crank, Suntour derailer,bar end shifters, Dia-Comp center pull brakes, Araya alloy wheels, BELT Japan Saddle.

An interesting thing I noticed, Suntour is stamped in the frame on the dropout, I've never seen that before.

here is my nishiki....im not sure what it is -model or year. Its a pretty blue, with chrome underneath the paint- chromed tips on the dropouts ( suntour GS ) its crazy light, and i picked it up on craigslist for $50 bucks this weekend. Unfortunately its been stripped of most of its original part because someone thought it would be better off as a single speed. The cranks are sugino mighty compe...and the code on that dates to Dec 1972 or so i think. Anyway, the serial number makes NO sense to me...it very clearly is stamped on the bottom bracket K7K 10088. most of the formatting i see for nishiki's are two letters followed by a number....so here is an odd one. any ideas??

I have what I thought was a 1981 Nishiki Ultimate but the serial number doesn't match with the database. Mine starts with KJ. According to that it would make mine made for the US market 1990. That doesn't work as K is supposed to be pre 1985. Any thoughts? Here are some pictures. It is equipped with all Campy Nuevo Record parts. Could this be a 1980? This is getting listed on Ebay as it is just WAY too large of frame for me. I just can't justify taking it apart for the parts. [IMG][/IMG]

My 1981 Ultimate looks just like that and is number KA14364 and I purchased it new in Canada.

That is beautiful! I think I like the IROC better though! That has always been my favorite color of them. There arent too many around that are unmolested that color.

Taking a closer look at it, it's probably a little older than mine because it has no cable braze-ons. I'm calling mine an '81 because of the PAT81 derailleur, but maybe they called it an '82 when I bought it; I don't remember. These models didn't really follow yearly changes like those in the catalogue. BTW, the Cervino and Maxima were different models from the Ultimate and the frames were made in Italy, not Japan (at least I know the Maxima was. And you're rihjt, that bike is in outstanding condition.
