I thought bartape was a pain

I started to stitch the elkhide bar covering I got from Velo Orange tonight and boy its kind of confusing at first. The product is great don't get me wrong but the instructions and illustrations leave MUCH to be desired. I guess they figure anyone attempting this endeavour has some talent. I finally figured it out but its slow going. Its gonna look really good when its done, probably sometime before Memorial day the way I'm going.

Are you using anything under the leather to keep it from slipping (e.g. spray adhesive, cloth tape)?

I was wondering about those. Do you need any sewing skills? Because I can't sew worth a damn.

I did it, was expecting all sorts of trouble (really not a crafty person), but actually found it very easy. Time consuming, but easy. Easier in fact, than bar tape.

I enjoyed stitching mine.

If anyone is interested in sending me their bare bars and hides, I'd be glad to stitch their elkhides.

I'll be stuck in the house until Memorial Day if the snow keeps piling up the way it has been. I need something to do while the women in the PB household watch American Idol!

I can't sew, and it took about two hours in total. The real problem is that you'd better be sure you're in love with your current bar and stem setup.

They come wityh an adhesive strip on them thats pretty sticky. Theylook like a million bucks but are time consuming and I'm really not that patient but I will manage. PB did you use the proofide on yours?

I bought a used bike off craigslist a few years ago, it had these bars, wrap, and levers on it. I don't know why the stitching was topside, but the set up looks good on my bottecchia. The leather moves very little.

The instructions could be better. For instance: "Look at your shoe laces. Do it like that." That's all you need to know!

I really like the appearance of the elkhide. Imparts a manly, western feel to a bike, in my opinion. Unfortunately our state legislature, under pressure from the PETA lobby, has outlawed its use.

Durn! I wish you had let this go a little longer. I was about to say something like; "Next door to me in Vermont, there's a small company producing synthetic elkhide for the environmentally conscience."

Oh well, another day!

I'm kind of torn between the elkhide and leather bar tape. I kind of like the smoothness of the elkhide, but I like the spiral of bar tape. At times, I look at the elkhide and just think there should be some kind of pattern or something there. Maybe even perforated holes, I don't know. I just got my barcons yesterday and it is time to remove the inner tube I had on the bars and put some tape/elkhide on them.

I like the elk hide and the stitching was a snap. Just wish there was some padding in the design...

I am looking at the VO Elkhide bar covers for my touring bike build. Has anybody purchased the macchiato color and how close does it match a Honey Brooks. I have a brand new Honey B17 waiting for a bike. I think if the colors come close Honey B17+ macchiato elkhide + Acorn seat bag=nice looking vintage tourer.

This probably means nothing to you, but the Expresso I got is really close to my ant brown Brooks, expecially with proofide on it.

It's a very close match! I have the Macchiato Elkhide on the bars and a Honey Professional waiting for my Super Sport, and while not exactly the same, they are pretty darn close. You won't be disappointed. And yes, SB, I did put a couple of coats of Profide on the Elkhide. Sort of disappears in a few days.

Check my other thread complete with pictures of the Elkhide wrap with the proofide and see how it matches the honey colored Brooks. That saddle has about a hundred miles on it and its starting to darken a bit. I like the look even if it was a bit frustrating. I'm not too patient with some of this stuff but it turned out ok I think.
