Miche hubs?

I've never seen these mentioned before? I was messing around this morning and finally wiped off the hubs on my ebay Bianchi, and noticed the hubs say Miche, with a stylish M logo above it. They have a clip and oil port similar to vintage Campy hubs. I take it these are a decent hub, or am I mistaken?,,,,BD

Heard of them, and vaguely remembering having at least one set of wheels with...but IIRC it was back in the 70's;) They were a decent hub or we wouldn't have been racing on them.

I have those on my trek 760.
They're decent hubs and I've had no problems during my use, but that wheelset is for sale.
I won't be using it too much anymore.

From what I've been told, there were some problems of the hubs wearing a little fast because of the races pitting? Not sure...

Miche made different grades of hubs (as well as other parts) and some of them were just fine, but...the only time I suffered catastrophic hub failure was with a (cheap) Miche rear hub.The spoke heads pulled right through the flange like hot little knives through butter, giving me the chance for a long walk home in cleated cycling shoes, then socks, then barefoot (my feet still ache thinking about it). YRMV, and I hope they do. I see some of the newer Miche track products look like really nice and well-made stuff. Back in "the day" Miche made parts sold in US as CyclePro, and you see a lot of cheap QR levers with that mark, made in Italy by the Brothers Michelin (no relation to the tire folks AFAIK).

Went through many of these when selling Benottos and working on many "European" makes during the 80s.

Miche hubs regardless of the model just aren't very reliable.

The races typically hold up - the cones don't - very much like Ofmega and Galli hubs.

I'm not saying toss 'em...just do the following:

1. Pick up good spare cones - from trashed Miche hubs.
2. Get the adjustment just right when riding em.
3. Inspect every 3-6 months...so you can catch bad cones/bearings before damage starts to occur to the races.

I myself would keep a supply of Campy, Shimano, Sansin and Suzue cones so I could substitute in Ofmega, Galli and Miche hubs. Putting quality known-to-be-reliable cones in the three hubs mentioned pretty much made them as good as the "real thing".

The weakest point with entry level and mid-range non-Campy European hubs seemed to be the cones.

Godawful waste in my opinion...go through all the trouble to manufacture nice looking, nicely finished hubs with decent races - and throw it all away with bad cones.

=8-)

They may or may not be original to the bike. The rims are two different types. The rear is a rounded style typical eighties rim. The front is one of those old red label semi aero Araya's. Like a "bullet", not deep aero. The brake levers are aero 600 with black hoods, so it looks like the bike was upgraded over the years. It's a Magny Sport(s?) SS.,,,,BD

I got a set recently on a 1984 Cannondale. They say Miche Competition on them. Any kung fu on the would be much appriciated. Well off to check Velo Base@

Nothing to do with their hubs, but the seatpost is wicked:

I have a Miche front hub with the little clip in the center. It came off a bike that was given to me. A few weeks back I decided to clean and lube it. When I took it apart one of the cups fell right out. I have never had that happen before. Anyway, I lubed it up and threw it in the junk box. I figured I better not try to sell it with the little cup problem.

It looked like it was a nice hub when it was new, though.

I have a Bianchi frameset that came with a Miche headset & bottom bracket. Both have given no problems but they aren't pretty.

Miche is still making components. I have one of their bottom brackets on my Carlton. Their track hubs are popular with the fixie crowd.

I never had any problems with my Miche Competition hubs. I think I got them in the late 70s or early 80s. Keep them. I still have them and may start using them again. George

I got a set of Michie Primatos on a Serotta I recently aqquired; when I went to overhaul them I found them to be sealed bearing. The spin extremely smoothly and are pretty nice looking.
