A Waterford Paramount, 1991

I am pleased to announce a new member of my growing Classic and Vintage collection, though this one may not quite fit most of your definitions of same. It is a 1991 Waterford Paramount, Shimano 600 equipped, it is in better condition than it looks in the pictures. I have already acquired a pair of Shimano 7 speed barcons and changed the seat and seatpost, but it will remain pretty much as-is. I do plan the typical overhaul, but it is in good enough shape to ride as is. The paint is almost perfect and BRIGHT! Perfect for visibility, anyway.

It sure is light, not quite as light as my old Cannondale, but not aluminum either. I do not know what the tubing is, as there is no decal. I bet someone here can tell me......

OK, I think it is still sort of C & V, as it doesn't have brifters.

It's a beauty RK!

My '92 Waterford Paramount was built w/ True Temper and I'm wondering if yours may be too.... Are those 600 hubs laced to the Campy Omega rims? Definitely vintage!

Bigwoo, yes they are 600 hubs and Campy rims.

Pastor Bob, Mrs. K saw it after it was unpacked and assembled. It was in the garage. She came in and told me how much she liked the color and then asked if it was too big for her. She is 5'4", the frame is a 61cm.

If I could find her one.......I'd probably do it. I don't think that is terribly likely, though.

Beautiful! The tubing is True Temper OS which was jointly developed by True Temper and Paramount Design Group.

Here's a picture of your new bike in the '91 Paramount catalog:

Thank you Stan!

Last night I took out my copy of "No Hands", and re-read about what miserable shape Schwinn was in during the late eighties and early nineties. They certainly produced a very nicely finished Paramount, though. The workmanship on that frame is incredible, even better than my classic Paramounts.

I'm confused. I had a 91 Paramount 5 series, same as the white with 'interference' grey in that catalogue, but I was pretty sure it was Japanese not Waterford. Did they look the same and were manufactured simultaneously on both continents?

Yes; Schwinn produced Paramounts domestically in Waterford, WI, while simultaneously producing the "Series" Paramounts in Asian factories in order to leverage the "Paramount" brand by offering a branded bike at a lower pricepoint than the Waterford built bikes.

PDG "Series" Paramounts 1990-1994
