Just got it couple of days ago, full shimano 105, it still had original panasonic tyres, very nice bike rides like a charm and super light, hills are a breeze (used to have steel before it...).

Those older "OCLV's" were great all-around bikes. Trek probably could still sell a good many if they chose to. The economy of scale on those would perhaps have them very affordable by now. I like the polished spokes. You see so many wheels all in black these days.

This may be bordeline vintage, but I'll post it here since my interests are old school and looking for advice from the old school crowd.

I had been looking to expand my 80's Schwinn collection to include a Paramount, but the price they bring is often to rich for me. PDG's a little more affordable but still even 105 equipped bikes seem way overpriced. But I stumbled onto this '92 PDG 9c frame and thought it a bit more special than all the PDG 3's and 5's and 7's I see floating around. And I like to upgrade, so just the bare frame was ideal. It's in great shape save for one big blemish in the recess on the drive side chainstay that I'll touch up. The fork is not original unfortunately, but I read the original was aluminum so no biggie I guess. It's a carbon/ threaded steel EMS. Not sure if I can cover up the white letters and maybe bring original looking blue 'Paramount' decals to the fork? Do they make those somewhere? I'll probably be going 10-speed on the build.

Looking for build advice though. Mainly color... I am having a hard time decided if I want to go all polished silver, like 7800 group, or black with carbon bits (SL-K crank, carbon seatpost etc) and black aluminum parts. I don't have an under 20lb bike yet so I'd like this to be a fairly light build, but nothing extreme, I'm shopping frugally and don't really need a superlight. Thinking about the BHS deep vee aluminum kinlin wheel build ~15xx grams, could go all polished wheels/spokes/hubs, or could go black. Hmmm.

Anyone know of any bar tape that might match the blue decals nicely?



i tired a google image search for the 9c for build ideas but got just about 0 useful pics. Apparently this is somewhat rare, at least to google images.

I'm a fan of early carbon fiber bicycles but have only owned one so far in my few years of collecting. This rather lovely Kestrel 200SCi (c. 1993) was outfitted with complete Dura Ace 7400 down to the hubs and seat post, a Cinelli bar/stem combo and Campy C-Record crank set. It rode very nicely and I probably would have hung on to it longer if it wasn't just a bit small for me!!

wrk101 has one that he's already built. Perhaps look at the catalog for ideas. Kestrel made that for Schwinn, and it's probably a lot more rare than any other Kestrel frameset. Yours is only the 2nd one I've even known about.

They came with Dura Ace, I believe, as the Series 7 had tricolor. Great bike, instant conversation starter.

This isn't 'vintage', but I've had people comment saying "that's a nice looking vintage carbon bike". I guess by today's standards, 2005 is vintage in the bike world..

My brother gave this to me a few years back, and I only started putting real miles on it this year(after changing out the crankset and wheels). It's a pretty decent riding bike and I'm a little faster on it(vs the steel framed bikes I have)



The same brother bought this Trek new back in the early 90s. HE's put a ton of miles on it, but now it's a stored away. I may take it on someday..

Definitely a Kestrel. Re-branded as the Series 9C. I've never seen one up close, but there was a slight change in the Kestrels during that time frame, with a flatter side on the BB shell. I've no idea which version of the 200 series ended up being the 9C. Another clue would be the seat tube, whether it allows the stem to bottom out or not. That change was sometime during that same era.

The 9C gave folks a chance to buy a race-ready full Dura Ace STI bike when not a lot of that was around, at any price point. If I'd have been thinking along those lines back then, I'd have bought one. As it was, most of the Schwinn dealers in my area were selling AirDynes and MagnaDyne trainers.

Yeah my research shows it was made by Kestrel for Schwinn, but I am unaware if there are any actual differences. What is odd though is that the fork is actually a Kestrel fork I guess. The 9c I believe came with aluminum fork. But I guess that still makes it a little proper lol.

I expanded my search to include black Kestrel 200 and did turn out lots of pics and color/build ideas. But I think I am going to go in a more modern direction with the build now, with a bit of an experimental flair too. Might be several weeks though till I am ready to start.

I had trouble fitting a DA or Suntour Superbe Pro DT shifter with the way the notches of the posts are lined up on the downtube and the only ones that I could find from my parts bin are these bar ends shifters. Its supposed to be temporary but it is working so well I decided to leave it alone.
