Help me find a clamp bolt for a Cinelli 1R stem

So to make a long story short, the head of the bold that secures the hidden clamp mechanism on this stem is stripped and I can't find a replacement. Apparently its a non-standard size, like an M7 with .75 (fine or extra fine) pitch. Does anyone have any clue where I might be able to track down a replacement bolt? Preferable stainless? I love the way the stem looks, and I would hate to have to ditch it just because the bolt head is stripped...

Thanks in advance,

-Steve

Plus they are alloy. Since the wedges are notorious for breaking or getting lost you might have some luck asking on the classic rendezvous list if anyone has a spare (as I am sure lots of those guys have boxes full of cinelli partial stems). Try also contacting the bike stand as I believe they may have the wedges as a replacement part, they might have the whole assembly. I sent them an email recently to see if they have any wedges as I am one away from having a complete 1R stem, but no reply I suspect it may have been bounced also. I'll have to phone one of these days.

I concur, had I not trashed the 2 that I had (both lost the wedges) I'd send one to you. Not to torment you, but call alot of your local bike shops and ask if they have old stem-bins/buckets. I bet you can turn one up in an afternoon for free

Did you ever find a replacement bolt?

I need to replace the clamp bolt on my 1R stem because I rounded out its hex socket. Fortunately the handlebar is held securely, but I'd like to replace the bolt as soon as I can.

Remember to grease the back of the wedge that slides against the angled nut on the clamp mechanism.
Doing so will help prevent it from binding when tightenong the clamp and prevent the wedge from cracking.
Don't get any grease on the face of the wedge that presses on the handlebar though, so it can get a good grip on it.
Unfortunately, the clamp design on the 1R was not done that well and my experience had been that you have to really put in a lot torque on the clamp wedge bolt to adequate grip the handlebar. That's why it is common to hear about owners breaking the clamping mech. It is almost a given that your first ride will have your bars twisting down on you on the stem, the first time you apply the front brake, even though you think you had it on very tight already, so be careful...
I'm curious whether team mechanics in the pro circuit did anything additional to Cinelli 1R stems to keep the bars anchored well as Cinelli's clamp design for the stem was really not that good.

I found a clamp bolt for my 1R stem at eBay here. Unfortunately when I started to replace the bolt I discovered the wedge was cracked. I found a used Cinelli 1A stem in excellent condition and will be glad to not have to deal with the problems associated with the 1R.

If you know the thread pitch and dimensions of the bolt you should be able to contact a large fastener retailer like Fastenal and do a special order.

That will not work in a Cinelli 1R stem. It looks like the clamp bolt for a Cinelli 1A stem.

Don't think there's any chance of that working as the bolt with the Allen head on it is "female" IIRC, the bolt on the 1R that threads on to the bar clamping wedge is "male"....

I've used brake mounting bolt pieces in Cinelli stems, but not for the hidden wedge bolt. I will check my stash, though, as I have about 5 stem bolts that I have no idea the origin.

[thread dig]

I've got two Cinelli 1A stems installed, one takes a clamp bolt like this:

The other takes a 'keyed' clamp bolt like this (similar to the one posted above):

The problem is, I would like to replace the latter keyed clamp bolt as there's a few rust spots on the face and I'm not sure how many turns the sleeve nut has left in it, but I can't find replacement clamp bolts like this anywhere.

Soooo, was the keyed clamp bolt exclusive to the 1A stem and when did they swap to the tapered/grooved one?

I had a 1R frozen in a pinarello record I bought last year. I cut it off just above the headset and burned out the remainder with lye. The clamp is still attached to the cinelli bars. Assuming, optimistically, that it isn't frozen too, it's available if someone needs it

Turns out its good and not frozen:

I loved the 1R stem, but they broke a lot. But the bolt and wedge were not strong enough so those broke a lot too. So I'm not sure which part would be more available. It was pretty exciting when mine let loose, but fortunately I was close to home

I'm glad to be rid of my 1R and happy with my 1A.
