does anyone know what this is worth?
 

HI, im thinking about trading a mountain bike for this guys old trek tri-series. I was wondering what it is worth or even what year or model it is. It looks pritty cool im thinking about converting it to a fixed gear. let me know what you guys think. thanks!

That is an 86 or 87 based on graphics. They went to more of a block style graphic in 88. Not sure of the model. Try vintagetrek.com for color schemes for those years.

According to vintagetrek, that is an 1986 500 Triseries.

"Worth" is dependent on what the bike market is like in your area, what mechanical shape the bike is in, and whether you like the way it fits/rides/looks.

As far as converting it to a fixie, you could do that - but your soul would burn in hell for all eternity. :D Also, the rear dropouts seem short, and also there will be unsightly shifter bosses on the down tube when you remove the lever.

What levelis the groupset?

AH whatever, buy it, strip it, take all the bosses off and powder coat and ride it as a fixed gear.. but that is a lot of work and those DOs are kinda short. Looks like a great ride as is.

I had one of those recently. I am pretty sure it was an '86. It lacked the SIDI decal though.

I purchased it for $150.00 last fall, did some clean-up, and sold it for what I considered a "buddy" price of $130.00 + some parts to local BF member who told me he wanted a rider. A few weeks later I saw it on CL with a picture I had taken of it with an asking price of $250.00. Apparently, it either sold, or the BF member decided to keep it.

Bottom line - I'm pretty sure that $250.00 for that model bike in a moderate bike market at a bad time of the year was not too much to ask. I imagine the right buyer would be willing to pay more - just not sure how much more.

That's not a classy move by that BF member. I had something similar happen in that I sold a frame to a BF member for what I paid, only to see him sell it on eBay or 3 times that amount! You'd think the first move would be to offer it back to me. Hmm.

That's one heckofa nice bike to convert to a fixie. You might do better to flip it and buy another old road bike. You could probably pay for the fixie conversion with the extra money. If you lived near me I'd swap you with a bike and cash to get that Trek.

lol I see what you mean. I was thinking I may rig up the shifter levers as a break. Then there wouldn't be that unsightly seen.
