old-style cleats- where are they?
 

i've been looking around to try find some of old shoes similar to the ones that i once had in the 80's- they were a set of sidi's made of mostly mesh, but more importantly, they had a cleat that had a horizontal slit running through it that wedged into the pedal. this kept your shoe from moving back and forth. these combined with straps held things in place. i'm sure some of you are familiar with what i'm looking for.

i'd love to use a similar shoe on my single-speed bike that i've set up with mks sylvan track pedals.

I think benscycle.net has some designed for keirin that bolt up to three-bolt look style shoes. Look in their track/fixed gear section. Pricey, I think.

when you say wedged, I'm not sure what you mean. Most of the older cleats nailed onto the sole of the shoe, and some of the last were drilled so that you could bolt them onto various clipless pedal cleat patterns. I have a bag of cleats. Tell me what will work for you.

One thing to bear in mind, modern shoes with all the straps on the top are a tough fit into old toeclips. You may have to *carefully* bend your old Christophe's to accommodate them.

On eBay, Vintage-Bike (a French seller) usually has ones that will screw into modern shoes for $15.00-20.00 plus shipping. I picked up a set last fall, and am quite happy with them, will probably pick up a spare set in the new future just to have on the shelf.

Looks like the OP wants shoes, not just the cleat that attaches to the shoes, although the thread title just says cleats.

I've seen old Detto, Diadora, etc. shoes on e-bay. As far as cleats, you can go to a shoe repair shop and have them attach a square of leather to the soles, maybe 1/4 in. thick at the ball of the shoe.. Ride around a bit until you have an impression from the pedals on the leather. Then take a hack saw and cut a groove to make a cleat.

The cleats from The Yellow Jersey are a good match for any shoe that accepts Look cleats. The trick is finding shoes that don't have a bunch of velcro straps that interfer with the toe strap. I've got some older Shimano shoes (circa 1999?) that have a minimal strap at the front, and work fairly well. (I've got a spare pair, size 45, that I'd be happy to sell).

The only shoes on the market nowdays that would do well are the triathalon shoes. They typically only have one velcro strap, and it's far enough to the rear to not interfer with the toe strap at all. Unfortunately, they tend to either be white or silver. Kinda fugly, in my opinion. Maybe a liberal application of dye might change them to a traditional black??

I think Yellow Jersey sells some cleats, but I don't know about shoes, either.

The Adidas Super Pro shoes (the leather ones) would work wonderfully with the three-bolt clips, as they're smooth on top and made of leather. Plus, they'd look the part, being that they're kinda retro (albeit with a carbon sole).

You can probably still find them new from some places. I use them with Look Keo pedals and they're comfy and stiff.

I've found some good deals on classic shoes on ebay (NOS thank you very much),
I bought some Dettos for less than $30 (ok they were black/yellow butt ugly).
Cleats also often come up on ebay.

I have a variety of NOS cleats at home, but no shoes. I was going to Ebay them one of these days.

Last year I bought a pair of brand new, but with old style cleats, Diadoras from Nashbar. They were very inexpensive - $20 or so. I haven't even used them yet, but I've been very satisfied with three other pairs of different style Diadora's over the years.

good point about the modern velcro stuff. i like dr. who's suggestion of the superpro. i was actually think about superpros when i found cleats at EAI's website.


i was referring to the ones that you could bolt in as opposed to the ones that you nailed into the shoe. i'm a size 43. although the adidas superpro might be a solid option, if you have any in 43, i would mind a look :)
