Clear coat decals
I bought an 80s Bianchi whose frame was in awful shape. Sanded, primed, painted, clear coated just a bit. My question is how to go about the decals and further clear coating. Should I wet sand the clear coat, lay down decals, and then clear some more? Does it matter how long I wait, because of course, the decals are on back order! Thanks in advance.

yes it does matter, depending on what clear you sprayed. The can should tell you whether you can recoat "anytime" or have to do it within, say, 30 minutes or after 48 hours. If you have PSA (self-adhesive) vinyl decals, and you have used a spray of water/detergent to allow you to position them, allow at least 24 hours for all the water to evaporate before you spray the clear.
Then do a mist coat, allow it to flash dry before you spray a flow coat over them. (BTW, if in doubt: TEST first, it's cheaper) I advise everybody to learn from my bitter experience (I've just spent days wet-sanding my '70s Allegro frame) and NEVER mix clearcoats, no matter how much time you've let one cure before you spray another brand...you are asking for a big can or trouble to be opened up on you.:( |
