[help] Benotto track frame identity

Got this second-hand Benotto frame, which has got repainted and covered any clue for me to identify the year and model.

Built it with some old stuff, and planning on going track racing with it. Some of the components are rubbish really, like the "suiside" hub, QR, seatpost and cheap headset (like $3 ), but... for the time being that will do.

photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/2463945...7604301112006/

Right side of bottom bracket shell stamped 0036-R. Left is 5-90-51. On the front there're two small letters that seemed like "SL"... means tubing?

(I suspect the 51 corresponds to my 51cm top tube?)

On the fork steerer there's a Columbus mark stammed on. Campagnlol dropouts front and rear. 27.0 seat diameter. Had a chain stay of diamond section. Italian thread.

The guy who sold me that frame was a racer himself some twenty or so years ago. He said that Benotto is a Mexican brand with products made in Italy. Now from my limited amount of research, that sounds a bit odd... most say that Benoto was Italy and moved production over to Mexico.

(It is truely Mexican now anyway... )

So... anyone with an idea of what this modle might be? And possible year of production? Any discussions are appreciated! I'm so excited I want to know more about this thing!

I'm guessing you'll be changing the chainring out when you hit the velodrome?

Yup... I have a FSA road 50 chainring that I'd swap when I really go racing. This Sugino is supposed to be used with a 13T cog or something, but I've only got a 16T at the back. But at present, I'll just use this spinning gear to get myself used to the fixed paddling action.

Tell you what... that sprouty K-Force chainring looks really good on this...

If the chainstays are diamond profile...that would put it very late 80's and possible very early 90's. Maybe 5-90 indicates a May 1990 production?

The last photo...can you provide a closeup of the BB - same shot but much closer?

=8-)

It could very well be a 1990 model that was built in Mexico. Mr. Benotto married a Mexican woman wnd moved to Mexico in the late 70's, I think.

The diamond shaped rear stays are a nice Benotto feature.

You can usually source Benotto decals on ebay. Cyclemondo has very good reproduction decals as well. Thats if you want to go to that extent - it does look nice without the decals though.

You can look at some Benotto catalogues on the Bulgier web site if you want to.

Sorry about the quality of the shot... clearest one that I got! And I don't have a camera... if I want to take another photo I have to borrow one again.

So~ what are the details I should be looking for? Apart from the serial number and those two little "SL" letters... ?? Those are all I noticed.

I checked, thanks for the info. However, it only had the photo of a Modelo 2700, with chainstays unclear (hidden behind the chain ring);

and also on the front page:

there's Francesco Moser on a (another!) "what-is-the-idenity" track machine, with that same chainstay as mine.

The cataloge lacks a photo of the entry-level Modelo 1700 so there's nothing to compare with.

Would the shapes of lugs be an important clue? Or how significant/important would this be compared to the chainstay? Cause if lug shapes are crucial, mine would be more likely a 1700 (similar to almost every single 1700 photo you'd find); but almost none of those 1700s had that diamond-sectioned stay.

Oh! Glad you said so, cause I like it that way. Clean and pretty.

Sadly the quality was rubbish really... color all nice, yet not cleanly done around lugs, too thick, and have a tendancy of coming off.

I have tie my T-shirt around the stem when I do interval trainings on my roller to prevent sweat from dropping onto the damaged paint.

Might get that repainted in the future... still, won't want to restore those decalls.
