7-Eleven Merckx Road Bike

For all you 7-Eleven junkies, I thought I would post a few pictures of the latest addition to my 7-Eleven bikes . The bike was used by Sean Yates who is very tall rider. You can see that this bike is to large for me to ride but it looks nice. I have included a before shot which shows the bike with components that were added at some time in the early 90's and had to be replaced. Since these shots were taken, I have also replaced the wheels with the correct Wolber rims. Ps. this wheelset ( Mavic Open Pro is now on Ebay). The only problem that I have with the bike is that it came with a chrome sloping crown fork. It should have been a flat crown, but who knows, it might be ok. Also the bike had 8 speed bar shifters. I was told that Yates waited two years to change over from down tube shifters, so I put down tube shifters back on the bike. All of his photos that I have seen show down tube shifters.

A good friend just had a 7-11 shipped to me for him. Not a true team bike, but the 1988 Team replica. Flat chrome fork crown, chrome rear triangle, Dura Ace 8 speed, brifters. It is an absolutely stunning bike.

I must admit that I am a fan of the 7-11's, but can't really see me owning one. I have two Eddy's, and my next bike will be a classic with modern tubing, something in the EL OS line.

PM me your auction number, I have a couple friends looking for a set of DA 8 speed wheels.

Yes, it cold very well be. That is a great picture of yates. Your pic didn't open for me but I assume it is the one in your article on 7-Eleven bikes where Yates is going up the mountain.

Looks great!! But you have to "Yates" the bars for it to be authentic.

Don't take this the wrong way, but if it doesn't fit, what do you do with it? I'm not trying to be a smart*****, but am genuinely curious. Do you display it? Do you tool around with it? Do you have plans to sell it? Having an actual team bike with provenance is pretty cool. I'm a real 7-Eleven junkie, but personally I'd rather have a replica that I can ride.

Thanks for sharing, Slurpee. I have one of these too (ex Ron Kiefel; another tall frame) and I've been trying to find information on it. It's been muddled with over the years and I'd love to get it back to somewhat correct. Is that saddle a Volare SLX? Nice, whatever it is. It's a beautiful beautiful bike and while I enjoy riding it, I do find it more sluggish than my Davidson and 3V of about the same period. Even though mine fits perfect, I can see a case for buying one for show rather than go

Dag-Otto had a Cinelli Gran Tour on his '89.

7-Eleven Merckx Road Bike

Good question, up till now all of the bikes I've bought, I can ride. I have been looking for a Merckx road bike for quite a while. I wanted it to complete a group that I am assembling. I have an 88 Serotta/Huffy road bike and a Huffy TT bike. Prior to this bike I found a 7-Eleven Merckx TT bike, but no road bike untill this one. Since I won't be riding too much longer, I will sell them someday when I quit. This summer I will be displaying them at the Cirque Du Cyclisme in Va., a CR group function and bike show. I do have a Merckx replica 7-Eleven bike which I ride on the road. Slurpee

7-Eleven Merckx Road Bike

Wow! That is very nice. I met with Ron a couple of times last summer when I was doing research and boy is he a great guy. He is easy to talk to and will spend time talking bikes. As for the saddle, I believe that I am correct in saying in the later years they used Cinelli Volare SLX almost exclusively, usually black but occaisionally they used white. It seems however that the bikes varied a little, especially if the rider had specific preferences. I have also seen early Serotta/huffy bike with turbo seats. I am going to take another look at your bike and see if I can suggest anything that you might want to change. Slurpee

7-Eleven Merckx Road Bike

Here are a few items to check on your bike: wheels ( Wolber Profil 18 or 20 tubular rims), fluted Dura Ace seat post, Cinelli Champione Del Mondo bar with a Cinelli stem, All Dura Ace components, also there should be Wolber decals on the rear seat stays, an E Merckx decal as well as a Columbus tubing decal on the front fork, the Wolber wheels also have Wolber decals and a small green 7-Eleven Cycling sticker. I have some of this stuff already accumulated if you need some of these items such as rims and decals. I hope that helps.

I'll probably take you up on that. I bought it with the Mavic clinchers as did the previous owner so the whereabouts of the original Wolbers are unknown. The previous owner removed the decals as he thought they looked too Nascar. It does have the fluted seat post that held a red O2 saddle. I swapped the whole thing out to a Flite setup I had sitting around. I'm looking for that pristine but reasonably priced Volare SLX and then I'll put it back to the way it was (might be a while, I know). In the meantime let's PM and talk about the rims and decals. Of course when you're ready to give it up, I'll be happy to add your Yates bike to the team collection.

Another one showed up on CL today. The seller is most likely fishing for a value, but I'm sure would sell if the money's right. From the description, it sounds like an '88 replica, but he/she calls it a team issue. Hard to tell without pics. Anyways, I'm going down the mountain this weekend. If anyone's interested, I'd be happy to check it out (way too small for me).

Why do you think that it is a replica? The serial # indicates a November 1987 build, it is located in a cycling mecca... could be the real deal.

I'm setting up my 1990 7-11 Eddy Merckx (Urs Zimmerman's) to ride with Dura Ace 10 speed for the time being while I complete my collection of vintage parts. Yes, I promise I'll use downtube shifters and a 7400 series crank.

Is this cool, or am I going to hell?

7-Eleven

Did you ever hear any more about the Huffy bike. I missed this post until today so maybe it is sold by now. When you need some Wolber rims for your 7-Eleven, I have a nice set of Wolber, Profil 20, tubular, NOS, that would be correct for your bike and with Wolber decals. I think that they are 28 Hole. Congratulations on your excellent collection!

geez. I wish I could show some sense when buying bikes. I could collect, oh, I dunno...dunelts or something. Maybe only Bianchis ridden by Fausto. The way I'm going now I'll have a complete collection when I have one of every bike ever made.

There's one on eBay right now that's my size. It's already over $1200 with several days left to go, so I'll have to pass. One day, when I win the lottery, I'll definitely own one.

Well, that is what I thought but I thought they had come from this bike.

I'm getting confused.

Remember, I haven't even seen the wheels or frame or anything yet .........
