ID A Bike For Me?

I've been asking around for vintage bikes and a coworker of mine has this bike. I want to give him a fair price, but I can't find any information on it.

Anyone here know? I Googled "open road bicycle" and "bicycle open road" and got a bunch of bicycle shops called Open Road.

Thanks in advance.

Jason

Jason,

Unless I am badly mistaken. I believe "Open Road" was a chain store house brand. Like Target or K-Mart. I'd say late 70's era, and one step above dead cheap. Turkey wings, lack of cable guides, bolt on wheels, all are hallmarks of a really cheap machine.

Ah okay, thanks. In that case, I think I'll pass.

For future reference, what are "turkey wings" on a bike?

"Turkey wing" is one of the nicknames for the brake lever extension. I guess this is because they don't work that well and it is assumed that turkeys don't fly that well. When I've seen wild turkeys fly, I'd say it is rather impressive. They are fast for their size and seemingly fearless when banking around trees.

If you are interested in fixing up old bikes, get this one for five bucks and practice adjusting the gears and brakes. You can use the frame to test your rattlecan skills. SheldonBrown.com has plenty of info. on how to convert that bike to a singlespeed/fixed gear on the cheap.

When you get done messing with it, donate it to the local bike co-op.
