My best bud was GIVEN a house by his elderly aunt.....I am not making this up.........and this old timer was in the attic........

Again I searched all the "official" info I could find. I found plenty of old Spitfires; but none with a "tank". The tanks also houses an electric horn I think. Sorry about the pics; dark attic ya know.........

Any thoughts????

Sucks to be your friend.

Very cool old cruiser. I think I'd sell it and buy Italian, but that's me. I bet that would bring the price of a darn nice Campy SR equipped Italian racer in today's market.

dude, there's something fishy hereabouts. I don't see no stinkin' spitfire, all I see is a pretty nice older Schwinn Traveller...you trying to trick us up, hea?

Thumpic 04-10-08 08:35 PM

spitfire on the head badge (for sure) and I think on the chain guard....but I didn't take the pics I did find a pic of a restored spitfire like it......I'll see if i can find a link........

okay, i cracked the code, and that is too cool. do you have a story that goes along with it?

oh, and that carpet is da bomb.

cyclotoine 04-10-08 09:11 PM

That is something else! Boy what a find!

McDave 04-10-08 09:41 PM

I like the Traveler too. :)

redneckwes 04-10-08 09:41 PM

All I see is a late 80's Schwinn?

Nevermind...I found it

roccobike 04-10-08 10:04 PM

When I was about 7 or 8, one of the neighbors purchased a green spitfire for one son and a blue one for the other. Too bad they beat those bikes into the ground. I remember the big thrill I got when they let me press the horn button. What can I say, we lived in a dull neighborhood.

Wow. Talk about a wayback machine. Way cool, that is!

my spitfire

This is a 55 spitfire, I don't think it had a tank. It has painted fenders that are currently at my buddies body shop being straightened, but I think the NOS chrome ones are very cool, espicially with a set of Ace hardware's finest SS hardware!! From what I've read and seen the spitfire was the low end of the schwinn line up. I think your bike was "pimped" by the original owner. however, that paintjob was common on a few of the lower end models.

I have bontrager 2.35's on mine, but if I could choose again I would have gone with WTB weirwolfs in 2.55.

G-funk... the OPs bike matched the other collector's bike in post #4 to a T. I really don't think the tank is a customization. More likely it was an option (but maybe that is what you mean). Also note that we are probably seeing the difference between the boys and girls models.

Check out the Dutch bike on Dave Moulton's site. Bought just before WWII, then put away when the war started in an attic, where it stayed for 64 years.

don't know about the bike, but if that's linoleum on the floor, it's worth about $1000 to the right people.

Geesh have you checked the basement yet? :)

Thats a sweet classic!

AntiqCycle 04-11-08 06:22 PM

Those are both beautiful bikes.

I wish I could find something like that in my attic.

Looks like carpet to me...

I never understood why people would put a bike in an attic, seems like alot of work to get it up there...

CHances are its not coming down for quite a few years.
