I bought a Trek 1000 a few years ago. Wait, come back, just read a little further! Anyway, I bought it for $75 and the seller told me it was a mid 90's. I recently did some research and it turns out it's an '85. See, it is vintage! :p The bike is spectacular; light weight, stiff, fits like a glove, so I decided to upgrade it. I'm putting on all new Campagnolo components and I'm trying to figure out if the stuff I took off is worth selling, tossing, or giving away if I find someone in need of crappy stuff.

Here they are:

Biopace 3 ring crankset and nameless bottom bracket
Suntour Sprint front derailluer
Shimano XT (old) rear derailluer
6 speed freewheel and rear wheel (not sure what kind)
Suntour friction and indexed downtube shifters
Shimano 105 white hood brake levers

Definitely shouldn't be tossed.

I suspect a volunteer from Maine will check in shortly to keep the biopace rings from the landfill.

The rest of it could find a home in my shop if you decide to give it away.

C&V people don't tend to throw anything away if it is functional. ;)

I discovered the master, Sheldon Brown, was a big proponent of Biopace, but I guess nobody's perfect. :p

I guess I'm ulimately wondering if I can recoup a little of the money I'm putting into it.

I'm convinced that for MY riding style/conditions that Bio Pace is great.

Are you sure? The first reference to the 1000 model I can find is 1987, it came with a mix of suntour cyclone 7000 and diacompe/SR... seems your components have been switched around... It's alloy right?

I found the same thing. The bike is clearly marked 1000, but there's a serial number on the underside of the bottom bracket dating it to 1985. I'm nearly 100% sure that the parts aren't original, I don't remember exactly when Biopace came out, but I think it was after '85. The whole bike really is sort of a mystery bike. All the literature from that period talk about the 2000, but I can't find anything about the 1000, so unless it's a re-painted, re-decaled 2000, it's a mystery to me. It is the bonded alloy that Trek used in that time.

I rode with the biopace for about 500 miles. In the big gear, it's ok, but when I'm climbing, it gives me a weird loping pedal stroke.

I found that at a lower cadence, the non-round big ring is very comfortable on old knees.

Are the 105 levers aero? If so I may be able to use them, got a set of 105 SLR calipers missing their levers. Original set were lost to a collision with a car.

I'm not actually trying to sell any parts. I'm just trying to figure out whether I should post all this stuff in the "pay it forward thread" or if it's actually worth it to (finally) pony up and pay for the membership or do the ebay thing or something like that.

I just read that the Biopace rings were designed around a cadence of about 60 rpm. It would make sense that they would be more comfortable at a lower cadence, then. I just can't get around the bobbing feeling I get when I ride them. To me, it actually feels like the entire bike wants to lope around. I thought I might get used to it, but it never happened.

Do you know if the white hoods were standard? They looked really good on the bike, but I've only ever seen black or brown hoods.

What color is it? I owned a very early 1000, 1988, and it was teal with white decals, white hoods,white bar tape. I loved that bike.

I have bad knees, especially my right. The Bio Pace supposedly has the slowest crank speed at the 6 & 12 o' clock positions. 12 o' clock helps me out because my knee "binds up" at 12 o' clock. This would cause the entire leg to move, rotating at the hip joint. Above 65 RPM, the inertia of the entire leg would cause my R foot to come off the pedals. With the Bio Pace, I can turn 75 RPM and keep the foot on the pedal. Shorter cranks also help in this regard.
My riding is flat city. I can understand where BP isn't great for mountain type riding.

It's yellow fading into white fading into yellow again, except in one spot where I think they actually screwed up the paint job. Damn this not being able to take pics. It's beautiful. White decals, yellow bar tape, and I just found a replacement hood in white for new Campy shifters! I'm actually putting '06 Campy parts on it, because they're all polished aluminum instead of black. Nice reason, huh? :D I wrecked into my friend last year in a stupid "let's switch our normal directions" move and the front fork is done. I just bought a carbon fork, and it just doesn't look as nice. :p Oh, and maybe just because it's the best fitting, best riding, fastest, most comfortable bike I've ever owned, I look past all the paint flakes and scrapes that it has.

Vintage Trek shows that there was a 1986 Trek 1000 with a yellow to white fade paint scheme.

Sweet! Vintage Trek must have recently changed their serial numbers section. I can't recall what the exact numbers are, but it starts with 217 which Vintage Trek puts at 56 cm '85 model. I wonder if Trek made them in '85 but released them as '86. Curious.

I've found the same thing. I really don't notice a difference, and I doubt most people could. I think it's all in UnsafeAlpine's mind! :p Also, I don't know anything about cadence, speed, heart rate, etc (I just ride my bike), but wouldn't a cadence of 60rpm uphill be a damned furious pace to keep?

Regarding the components UnsafeAlpine lists, I'd probably buy most of them (especially the triple crankset, derailleur and brake levers), but I wouldn't pay terribly much. It might be worth it to sell them locally on CL. Might not be worth it to sell on ebay - with the exception of the triple crankset which, if in very good condition, could bring a small chunk of change.

As for the 105's hoods, yes, they came in white from the factory as well. I've not run across a brown. Interesting.

And just who did you have in mind?:D
I got back into biking when the Docs told me to stop running. I've always been a grinder, and the Biopace rings suit my style, beat-up knees, and New England hills.
If the aOP would care to PM me, perhaps we could come to an arrangement:D
