Wrench Question

Does anyone recall offhand what size wrench a Raleigh 3 speed Sports takes for headset adjustment?

Old Fat Guy 04-11-08 08:04 PM

Crescent

Probably something Whitworth sized and silly. An adjustable wrench is mandatory equipment for Raleighs.

Metric, Whitworth or standard?

They don't call adjustable wrenches "English" wrenches for nothing.

Reminds me of the tractor dealer on my old UPS route. We were joking about wrenches, and he told me he had a metric Crescent wrench, sure enough, he turned a 6" wrench over and it said 150mm.

I bought lunch!

Probably one of these. At one time I think most Raleighs below the International had one of these in the carton with the pedals, owner's manual, etc.

For the locknut? If I recall right, I had a gently filed down metric 32 (or was it a 30) to do the trick, for it is Whitworth.

I knew a BMW mechanic who refered to his adjustable wrench as "ein engalander".
some one who knows his german can correct the spelling.
I sold my whitworth wrench set with my Triumph TR-3 but I picked up a whitworth bicycle wrench off Ebay pretty cheap. have fun.

Fair enough- I'll grab a big adjustable. I was stopping by the local shop and was wondering if a modern there was a modern, new headset wrench I could get that would be a direct fit. I guess not- I'll have to get a big adjustable and go to work on it.

Thanks
