A $6500 Huffy?

I just saw this ad in CL and was baffled. So, I thought I’d ask for your opinion.

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/bik/655835497.html

Someone is asking for $6,500 for a 1970’s Huffy. I’m assuming that this bike couldn’t have cost much more than a $100 when new.

Granted that it appears to be in good condition, but is there such high demand for older bikes and is this representative of the current market price for “vintage” bikes that were considered cheap bikes back in the day?

cyclotoine 04-25-08 11:18 AM

It's probably a joke born out of the frustration with absurd, CL prices.

retyred 04-25-08 11:21 AM

Let this CL posting teach us all a lesson: Do not stop taking your meds!

JunkYardBike 04-25-08 11:35 AM

I'm guessing someone forgot a decimal point.

mconlonx 04-25-08 11:37 AM

One of those cost $99.95 on the base PX back in 1979. Maybe $109 at a department store.

I had a Santa Fe as a first bike. Rode it for years. It sucked. I didn't find out how much, until I borrowed a friend's Ross (with aero downtube!) and found out how much better a bike could be...

Asking that much cash for that particular bike is... amusing. I see ads asking crazy prices for all kinds of stuff, but that one takes the cake. Amazing what people think things are worth...

I was hoping to see a Serotta built Huffy. :)

0stick 04-25-08 12:53 PM

Thank you for your replies. I was starting to wonder if the vintage bike market had gone mad.

BikeManDan 04-25-08 12:57 PM

Its a typo

That seller is such a ******bag, just as a side note

caloso 04-25-08 01:09 PM

I was hoping to Heiden's, Phinney's, or Roll's bike.

jsharr 04-25-08 01:46 PM

So wait, are you guys saying I got taken? BTW, I talked the seller down to an even 5 grand.

Flying Merkel 04-25-08 01:47 PM

Maybe that's the price for a hundred Huffys, though even $65.00 is highly optimistic.

I rode one similar back in the 70s after my Schwinn Continental was stolen. Most horrid thing on two wheels. Everything was awful about it. Not one redeeming feature except the price. If that was the only bike I'd ever rode, I wouldn't be riding today.

No, because everything is bigger in Texas, including prices. For Texas, that's a fair price for the Huffy, and you got yourself a real deal by haggling.

It has.

The real trick is how to make it work to your advantage.

+1 on the ******baggery. this guy is our local dump troll. why can't we have pastor bob chillin at our dump? this guy is the crack kills poster boy. I love the gymnastics mat backdrop. I was out at his place last week looking into Delcroix for a friend. of course the second he told me that he lived on Orchard Station road in Petaluma CA and had 3 barns full of bikes I knew that the bike we were going to see was a POS. when we arrived I offered him 5000.00 for his "collection" as a joke and he went into a rambling lecture about how these bikes are worth way more than that. he lists stuff for crazy prices, always posts in caps and changes the town he lives in on a regular basis. I am always pissed when I open up an item on CL and it's his.

Sounds like a move a bike thief would make.

When I saw the title I thought that it was going to be about the huffy radiobike.

zonatandem 04-26-08 08:13 PM

Never mind what they are asking for the old Huffy!
Look at what you are paying for a gallon of gasoline! Bought gas in New Jersey in the 1950s @ 12 cents a gallon.
