cheap 700c's?

So my friend is looking to change the wheels on her peugeot to 700c (with a freewheel) and I was wondering where I should look for a cheap wheelset. Can anyone recommend any good sets for around $75? Thanks.

Just put a "wanted" ad on CL. That's how I get cheap wheels when I need them.

I recently bought two 700c wheelsets from Craig's List seller's: one for $25 (wide Araya rims and Sanshin hubs) and one for $50 (Mavic rims and Shimano Dura Ace hubs) and both included tires in good shape. If you can work with a rear hub that was originally spaced for a 5 or 6-speed, you can find lots of bargains.

Hi Spikyho -- you were looking for a vintage bike last year I recall. Can you tell us what you bought?

Big difference, if you're looking for clinchers. If tubulars are OK, then the world is your oyster. If you want clinchers, then 6-speed sets are plentiful; 5-speed sets much tougher to source. When 5-speed was in vogue, there just weren't many decent clincher rims.

I ended up getting a 87' Trek 560 a few weeks ago. I paid a lot for it but it was completely worth it (aside from the fact that one of the shifters just broke on me)

My shop has new 700c wheels with alloy hubs and Alex DM18 rims for around $70 per set. Your LBS should have something similar.

I found a set of Ukai alloy 700c wheels with Suntour hubs for $55 on eBay. My Nishiki Olympic 12 had French hubs and wheels, but Japanese everything else.

Bikepartsusa.com. I believe I have a set from there, that I got second hand. Decent hubs and polished Sun M13II eyeleted rims.,,,,BD

I recently found a slightly used handbuilt wheelset for $125. Tiagra hubs and Sun CR-18 rims.

Previous to finding this, the best deal on handbuilt wheels I could find online is through Universal Cycles. It appears they are backordered on Sun CR-18 36 hole rims, which are ideal for rear wheels (unless the rider is very light and not carrying much of a load). Anyway, currently you can get Tiagra hubs, Salsa Delgado rims, DT Competition butted spokes, and brass nipples built up for $170 before shipping ($16 less with Sun CR-18 rims). I'd figure $25 for shipping, but it may be cheaper since you are both on the West Coast.

Handbuilt is the way to go for longevity, and wheels are the best investment you can make.
