got my first bike!

i picked up a vintage touring bike a couple weeks ago in a second hand store and i wanted to know if anyone here would be able to tell me anything about it. it's a company called steyr and the model is a clubman. all ive been able to find out is that its austrian company that no longer makes bikes. its also not in too bad of shape (ill post pics in the morning) minor rust on break calipers, but i got most of the rust off the chrome. i wanted to know the best way to get the pedals and gears clean though. can anyone give me some newbie advice?

I'm sure East Hill will give you the usual and unavoidable advice!
Oops, sorry, you WILL post pix I now see (thus avoiding 7 years of bad luck - at least) - let's 'ave 'em then!

Hi,
you're right, the company doesn't make bikes (or anything) anymore, it's been split up and sold step by step.
The firm was called Daimler-Steyr-Puch AG, or Austro-Daimler-Puchwerke AG in the earlier years.
They even produced the "Unimog", the Mercedes G-model, tanks and other weapons. And bikes, for more than 100 years.

I know the Clubman as an entry level bike with stamped dropouts, cottered crank, Simplex delrin derailleurs, Dia-Compe centerpulls and Normandy hubs (very good for quick & easy dating), albeit with alu rims.
Sturdily built, it should serve you well, even if it's not really light.
Good object to learn to deal with a vintage bike, maintain it and so on (just don't throw too much money at it).

As other's have said, the Steyr Clubman is a solid but lower end bike. It's should give you good service.

For cleaning gears, I usually use a cloth rag.
