Benotto - derosa link ??
Could some expert out there help me. Iam looking for a vintage benotto 300 from the 70s and some of the pictures of these frames seem to be particularly "derosa" esque. Ie they have the diamond chainstays anf dubois type lugs is there a connection ?? did ugo build for Benotto in tose days. Any help finding one of these would be great also.

Bumping this very old thread. I am also curious about this as well. I recently found an old Benotto (3000?) that has the classic De Rosa lugs, diamond shaped chainstays, and heart cut-out on the BB. Mine is definitely made in Italy however I can't say for sure if it was made by De Rosa or if De Rosa just supplied the tubes. Anyone have any insights on the connection?

Benotto had an "employee" who worked inside the De Rosa shop. I don't know if under eh supervision of De Rosa or not, but many Benotto frames left the De Rosa shop. Most of the Benotto team bikes were built by De Rosa.

Thanks Citoyen du Monde. I think that may be the case with mine. Is there any clues in terms of quality or details that may indicate it was an "employee" vs Ugo?

First off, the chances of stumbling onto a "team" bike are virtually nil. Then the biggest difference would be a special geometry and perhaps special selection of tubing; and only the top team riders could hope of getting a special build. You have a 99.9 % probability that it is a Benotto built inside De Rosa and not a De Rosa built Benotto

This would probably date the frame to sometime in the seventies. These were common to De Rosa's of that time. De Rosa was also still quite a small builder in the 70's so maybe the chance of it being a De Rosa built Benotto might increase a little. Lastly, the person I bought it off of told me it had belonged to a friend of his father who was a professional cyclist. At least I'm hoping :) |
Hi, mine have I think quite similar lugs, cutout and the diamond shaped chain stays, but have Cinelli BB.

I've often wondered. I have two Benotto track bikes that have the same features. "Diamante" chainstays and that lovely heart cutout in the bottom bracket. One has the full decal set, the other was raced with "Raleigh" decals. Both are champaign colored and have "Benotto" engraved in the top of the seatstays. |

This reminds me of the 'Cinelli built' Windsors that people convinced themselves (including me) they had.

As much as I know frames are many times built by third party builder.
Like Losa, Romani, BMZ etc. So its interesting to figure that out. Other than that, there's always the question of is it Italian Benotto. It would sound less economical to me if Benotto sent all the components to Mexico and then back to Italy for the Italian market, when he could just ask someone like the third party builders to do most of the work for him. So that's another reason it is interesting. |
