Old Bicycle, Of Course

While surfing the net, trying to find out how to fix my "really old bike, I ran into answers on this neat web site. I have not ridden in about 20 years, so this will be a new experience.

I blew a knee (it would have gone soon anyway...too much jumping, dancing, skiing, etc soon...playing tennis) about 5 years ago. I am going nuts not being able to do some kind of "out and about" exercise.

Anyway, as soon as I figure out how to get around this site, I need help in figuring out how to fix the gears on my old 3 speed bike The cable to the shifter has come out of the shifter mechanism. (The bale covering is about 2" long with bare wire to the lever in the brake housing. There are no clips on the frame. (I made the mistake of lpaying a man to "work" on it for me. I think all he did was spray paint it and lose various small screws and clips!!...screwing it up worse than it was.) Anyway, I am trying to figure out how to insert the cable into the shifter lever. The total in/out movement of the chain going into the hub is about 1/2" to 3/4". Since I have no idea what I am doing, any help would be appreciated. I do have a friend who is helping, and he sorta understands all this stuff.

I really would like to have this old bike back in action, but it may just be out of the question. If so, I just want a "run-around" bike with 3-speeds and pedal brakes. (My old bike had pedal and hand brakes!! I loved it.

Thanks,
Love

What does the cable end that came out of the trigger look like? It should have a piece of brass crimped on to it. If it doesn't, you need a new shifter cable, and those are readily available on eBay or through online sellers. If the brass end is still there, you can put feed it back through the hole in the shifter body, take a small thin-bladed screw driver to lift up the plate at the top of the trigger, feed the cable under there and seat it in the narrow channel that's in the center of the trigger. Put the trigger in 3rd, and give the cable a good tug from outside the trigger to make sure you've seated that end. And if that description doesn't make sense, refer to https://sheldonbrown.com/sturmey-archer/cable.html.
