1988 Gary Fisher Montare XT

Here's one of two bikes that have been passed down to me from family members. I actually started this post in order to help ID this bike, but then came across this chart upon searching the forums, matched up the components and figured out what I had. This was purchased by my dad in the early 90s and I took it over four or five years ago.

I imagine the answer to this question is a bit more complex than "yes" or "no", but would this be an appopriate bike to tour on, given a new set of tires? I'm planning a trip out to California this summer and am thinking of taking this bike or a Bianchi that I'll post about in a separate thread. A Few photos:

This would be a great choice for a touring bike. You have to test the Biopace to see if you like it (I had the same rings and did not like them at all). Regrease everything and get new tires and you have a great ride for little money.

Not a big fan of the BioPace. What did you replace yours with?

Perfect platform to build a tourer around

Great to hear positive impressions from the both of you. I feel much more confident about going forward with this frame as "the one" to travel on this summer. Think now I'll focus on swapping out some components, hunting down a comfy saddle, and learning how to take the whole thing apart, clean & grease it, and put it all back together.

I changed out the inner ring with a steel 24, then a middle XTR 36, and found an old 48 Syncros outer ring. Check with your LBS what they have lying around. Have fun !

Nice bike!

Rivendell sells 110/74 BCD chainrings that should fit that crank. 48/38/28 and a 14-32 on the rear should be nice for road touring.
