Here is my latest CL find and Mother's Day gift. This is a Pashley from, I believe, the late-70's, early 80's. The woman I bought it from said she inherited it after her uncle's brother-in-law brought it over from England. All she wanted was $75!

It has rod brakes and a Sachs Torpedo 3 speed hub. The lights and generator still work. The seat tube sticker says "Made in Stratford upon Avon." I've already switched out the funny Dunlop tubes for Schraders. And eventually it will get a Brooks B-66S put back on it along with a wicker basket. The Torpedo hub feels a little weak and cheap to me, so I may eventually lace it to a Sturmey Archer AW if I can't get it to spin better.

sweet. 75 bucks?! you can't buy a wal-fart bike for that. amazing isn't it? nice bike!

I have a german bike made excactly like that (Iwish mine was in that good of shape) mine is marked seko and made in germany and has a S-A aw hub marked 56

Pashley is a quality bicycle.
Treasure it.
Not sure about the Torpedo hub, but a Sturmey Archer SW, or better SG, would be an improvement I suggest.
The later Pashley Princess is a true classic IMHO.

The Torpedo 3sp hub has been around nearly as long as SA's.

The Torpedo hub is probably fine. I pulled it apart to clean and lube it and I'm having a little bit of trouble keeping it adjusted. It just doesn't feel as good as the SA hubs I've used and rebuilt.

Incidentally, does anyone know of any date codes hidden on a Torpedo hub or on the Union lights and dynamo?

That Union dyno is an early '80s type.

When I picked it up, the tires had gone flat and no one could figure out how to fill the Dunlop valves (replace them!). She claims to have ridden it all last summer even though the brakes barely worked and the squishy saddle was way to high for her. She was excited because she had just bought a replacement Trek cruiser thingy.

I saw that bike too! I almost called on it...but I just finished building a new 3spd for my lady. I really had no reason, other than it is super cool!

I almost didn't get it. There were 2-3 people in front of me who ended up being no shows.

You did well there.
Relax, brakes and so on are easily fixed, irrespective of what she said.
