how do i remove a head badge w/ rivets?
 

im trying to remove an aluminum head badge with rivets attaching it to the bike without damaging the head badge. any input on how i should go about this?

Center punch the rivets and drill into them with a small (~1/16") sharp bit. This will remove the rivet heads and allow the headbadge to be removed.
You'll need to buy new rivets (or very small metal screws) to re-install it.

I've been able to push the rivets out a bit from the inside of the headtube before, then use diagonal pliers on the outside to pull them out the rest of the way. The rivets can be reused if this method is successful.

This is my technique, as well. Be very careful and steady with the drill. A shop stand for the bike really helps.

How does one replace rivets? I've got a pop rivet tool, but these aren't pop rivets, are they?

i remember one of the frames i had were actually screws but looked like a tack so used a di grinder and saw it flush with the frame. i didnt want the head badge but i really want to keep this head badge. im also trying to figure out what kind of centurion bike this is. if you know id like to know. the rivets look like this.. thats the actual bike. where would i be able to get rivets that look like that and would fit correctly? any stores i might be familiar with?

Another possibility: Instead of replacing the rivets, you can glue the headbadge back on and use cut off spoke ends in the rivet holes.

I don't know if you're just collecting the badge and tossing the bike, but if you're going to be painting the bike, you can just mask it off with masking tape. Cut paper in the shape of the badge, then slowly, carefully tape the masking tape to the edges of the badge and fold it down onto the paper so the sticky part of the tape doesn't pull the paint off the badge when you remove it. This is easier if you use many smaller bits of masking tape, you'll go crazy trying to do it with one piece. You can use a dremel tool to remove the bits of rust or flaky old paint in the seams near the badge.

No, they're not. Occasionally they show up on eBay. You might also be able to find them at McMaster-Carr.

I would try to mash the top of each rivet dome slightly with a large, square-ended punch, and then use a sharp awl to make a little starter divot in the center. Then start with a very small drill, 1.5 mm or less, and work your way up until the rivet gives up the ghost.

I deliberately didn't link you to the actual rivets, 'cos if you check the site thoroughly you will find all sorts of useful obscure bicycle stuff.
