Goodbye Schwinn Breeze, dumping you for a Raleigh Sports

With apologies to Schwinn Breeze lovers, I’m dropping out of the club …

Some of you may recall, I picked up a yellow 1973 Schwinn Breeze for $20 (photos), to fix up for my wife.

Well, I just scored a 1978 Raleigh Sports step-thru. It’s a better frame (lugged vs. EF tubes; 9 pounds lighter); it’s in better condition (prior owner clearly cared for it – it has touch-up paint on it); and to top it off, it was FREE.

So the Raleigh will be my wife’s bike and I’ll sell the Breeze.

Bye bye, 1973 Schwinn Breeze

Hello, 1978 Raleigh Sports (seller’s photo – wrong side, I know)

Well Sir, 20-bucks is what the Breeze as in that foto would go for in our thrift shops and if I were closer to Mad-Pond than I am (the Quad Cities) I'd give ya the twenty for it.

Having said that, is there some reason your wife can't own two bikes? I ride my Raleighs or Schwinns for different reasons and am glad to more than just one.

Your Breeze is a LOT nicer than this one:

Can't believe what some folks think their old bikes are worth!

Wow, that is impressive. I suppose the desert air keeps old bikes rust free ...

Hey, weren't you looking for a Schwinn green & white saddle? Did you get the original saddle off this seller's bike?

Madison seems to be a good market for this kind of bike these days, they are becoming trendy with students. I'll clean it up and list it in spring - $50-$85 seems to be the going rate for a Breeze in this shape. (I got lucky finding it at a church garage sale)

My wife has not owned or ridden a bike since she was a kid, so she would see two bikes as overkill. She just needs something for neighborhood family rides. She tried the Schwinn and it felt too big and unwieldy. The Raleigh is smaller. And it's so much lighter, it just feels easier to ride, especially uphill.

No, a brown & white one, but I sold that Collegiate for $200 this past Summer!

A decent Breeze, like yours, should bring around $75 in a college town. It would sell quickly in Ann Arbor at that price.

I asked in ISO/WTB, but I'll try again here:

Notice this bike is missing its chainguard ... Anyone have a chainguard to match?

Postscript: my wife just rode this 1978 Raleigh Sports twice last weekend.

It was her first time riding a bike in 12 years.

She likes it!
