The sensitive question, dutch rides better than italian and belgian bikes?

I been moving around this thread for a while and always wishing to be able to have one. Asking the question above because looking the pictures in this thread I always got the impression that even the oldest dutch racing bikes looked quite modern in the geometry compared with italians or french from the same era.

Have done some finetuning on my AANDEWIEL. Red cables, orange Tressostar covered with shellac, NOS gum hoods and finished it with a red water bottle. Absolutely georgeous, Wouter! That pinstriping is hypnotising with the red&black theme. And those parts look brand new as well.

thx Zieleman aka the don! Everyday i get hypnotised. When i return back home from a day's work at the office I tend to drink a beer and admire it for quite a while (that sounds really freaky...haha)...Still not 100% confident about the orange cotton. My idea was to match the orange golden colour of the decals. Perhaps later on i will switch to red. Also have some high flange record hubs left and a 1st edition SR rear mech I might install. Am really fond of those old rides with pinstriping. Would love to have this on fitted on the walls of my living room. Unfortuntaly the Misses doesnt have the same sense of home deco

It turned out great Wouter. This orange tape now certainly works now its darkened with the shellac on this bike as well.

Thnx guys. Somehow I havent figured out yet how to post bigger pics.... I tend to wrap it with the rubbers allready installed on it. Havent done it in another way. Guess you can also do it before you install the hoods, is that correct?

I usually wrap the bars before putting the levers on. That way I don't have to fold the precious hoods, but when rewrapping I'll have to fiddle with he cables to get hem off again. Also, if it's a bike you tend to ride often (which I believe your Aandewiel is not quite ), wrap towards the stem. That way it won't slide off after riding it for a while. You wrapped it 'the Eddy way', which looks very cool without any tape holding it down at the top, but of course Eddy got his bars rewrapped every single race or stage.

just done it the way it looks most useful. when you are pulling the bars you dont want to unwrap your tape. that was my kind of logic. but still i have to remove the levers beforehand. thats kind of stupid....haha

Wrapping from the top downward is a no-brainer with cotton as far as I'm concerned. Looks so much better than electrical tape or twine. What I actually meant was that your tape seems to be wrapped inwards on the left side, outwards on the right, which makes it look like the bar tape 'continues' through the clamp. That looks cool; I was wondering how it would hold up. I have been told to wrap inwards on both sides, i.e. symmetrically.

Hi Maarten, aah I get what you mean. Yes it is not consistent considering my "pulling the handlebar" point of view, but it looks ok. It will hold up since I have wrapped it under pressure and afterwards i have sealed it with schellac. That locks it up kind off due to the schellac its sticky chracteristics and gives it protection against grease stains. I dont mind the electrical tape with 80's faux leather but for cotton I prefer to do it this way. The only thing is that I am not that happy with the double wrapping at the brakelevers. Doesnt look as clean as possible. Perhaps I will refine when I have sourced some SR levers.

In the mean time I finished my Presto winter project way faster then I expected as the last missing pieces in the group I wanted for it came along for a swap.
I bought some new hoods, cables and black tressostar to finish it and I certainly plan to use this bike a lot next year.




I normally put on the bartape after the levers and wrapped these towards the stem.

Several different types to be found at the moment, dont know about his shipping rates abroad but it will probably be reasonable.

I usually wait untill something comes along on marktplaats as that is usually much cheaper but hoods seem te be very scarce and when they are offered they will be around defietsenmakers price anyway.
