126mm Campy Hubs
 

Thanks to the generosity of a friend, I've got a Moulton-built John Howard from the '80's with 126mm dropout spacing...best birthday present I've gotten since my first bike at age 5.

Said friend did a lot of legwork tracking down many campy parts, and the bike is beautiful. The only major non-campy bit is the rear wheel...it's got a C-record front hub with a 130mm shimano 8-speed rear.

I saw a set of correct-sized campy hubs on eBay, but they're victory. My questions are, are those reasonable hubs, and what would they be worth? And would I be better off just trying to find a C-record rear hub? I'm a reasonable wheel builder, and I've already got rims in hand.

Some of my 120 mm spaced 5 speed freewheel Campy hubs came with an extra aluminum spacer to extend them out to 126 mm for 6 speed freewheels. You could measure the spacer on a 120 mm hub's axle and make one that's 6 mm longer. Might have to recenter the hub on it's axle.

There's a rear c-record hub on ebay right now with a day+ to go. A search of completed listings shows multiple complete rear wheels sold for reasonable prices, too.

From recollection, Victory was a quite reasonable groupset. If the price is right I'd buy them.

The bearing races could be pressed steel but someone might be able to say if they are pressed steel or precision ground.

I would venture a guess that victory are ground as they were second in the line-up but I don't know. Chorus were ground and they are essentially the same hub (well actually the same hub but came with slightly different skewers)...

You say your C-record hub has 8 speed shimano? I don't think shimano ever made an 8 speed freewheel so are you sure? Is it a freewheel or freehub? If it is a freewheel you should simple swap (or saw) the axle and respace/redish and put a 6 speed freewheel on.

I apologize for rambling in my original post. It's actually a shimano freehub with an 8 speed cassette. The FRONT hub is campy record.
