First classic buy, did I do OK?

I was running some errands yesterday on my bike and saw this in an old guys front yard. It had a blue handlebar bag and a sign for sale - $40. I thought my hubby might like it for running errands as his bike is an old Medici with no rack mounts. I bought it and a set of panniers front and rear. It is a 1981 Centurion Super Le Mans. The derailleurs are suntour, hubs are sunshine, rims are araya, brakes are dia comp, and the cranks are sugino. I really like the bikes from the eighties because that is when my hubby and I started riding, we were 13 yrs old. Is this bike pretty much original? We have no plans to butcher it, just clean it up and ride it. Here are a few more pics.

[IMG][/IMG]

I took it out of the back of my truck and took these pics before the sun went down. The seat post is backwards....how funny.

[IMG][/IMG]

I think the pinstripe and lugs are what caught my eye as I rode by.

[IMG][/IMG]

I love that little wheel lock thingy.

[IMG][/IMG]

Is that so the chain can't fall off and scratch your cranks? I wish my bike had something like that, I am bad about pedaling backwards when going down hills.

Anyways, just wanted to see what you all thought about my find. My neighbor has an old Miyata with shimano 600 that might fit me. She is the original owner and it is in awesome condition, I might try to buy it to match hubby's new old bike.

That's a great errand bike find for $40. Congrats!

I think the pedals are wrong...look like they are on the wrong side...someone overhaul them and put the axles in bass ackwards?

They could very well be. Or maybe he just wanted to match the seatpost!! This guy was pretty old but loves to work on bikes. He had sheds full of neat old stuff. I am sure he had some period correct pedals in all of his stuff somewhere.

That bike will make a swank errand-runner. I'm building up an old Kurahara as one as well.

Here in 40 years or so, I'm aspiring to be the old guy with the boxes of ancient cool stuff in my area hehe

Definitely a good find at $40, IMO. The pedals aren't backward, they're just upside down. They're just generic '90s mtb pedals that are missing the toeclips.

You can't put pedals on backwards. The left pedal is left-hand thread.

Brenda, that "lock thingy" is called a Flick Stand. That and the bar end shifters are worth the $40, so the rest is gravy.

Nice bike for a nice price.

Yeah, the tabs seem to be on the wrong side, good eye.

There should be a mark on the pedals, either on the wrench flats or the stub of where it screws in, marked (most likely) L & R.

Nice catch for $40.

I'm the guy she bought the bike for, but I haven't been able to see it yet since I'm out of town working. Seems like its in good shape. I had an '85 Peugeot that I put Suntour derailleurs on and that bike shifted really well. Can't wait to see it in person-sorry jwa keep your money.

You done good hunny!

The flip tabs go on the bottom edge of the rear cage of the pedal. They're for flipping the pedal with the toe to get your foot into the toeclip. There is nothing visibly wrong with these pedals.

And the bike is a find at $40.

Second look, you're right, on both counts. I'd even buy if for $40!

Excellent find and a good riding bike. She looks nice even without a cleanup. Lucky husband!

Around here I could get $40 for the wheels and $70 for the frame. The barcons are worth $40 on Ebay and the downtube cable clamp would bring $10. Enjoying the bike - priceless.

I've been riding basically the same bike for a few months now and I love it. Looks great for 40 bucks and you don't even have to replace anything. Search for the Centurion serial number database thread and post the serial number if you can. It should be on the downtube opposite the big ring.

Very nice find. well worth the 40 bucks you paid.
Now about that Koga Miyata you mentioned, did you get it?
they are good bikes, mostly under appreciated (except for
here in C&V land). And before East Hill can chime in, we need pictures!
Oh, yah almost forgot. Welcome to BF and to Cranky&Vintage forum.

Actually, I am really into bikes, although I only have one and hubby has several. His are all nice to look at and mine is kind of a junk yard dog. I figure I can't see what I am riding so I get to look at all of his nice eye candy. This is what I get to drool over when we ride together, now I think I am the lucky one!! It's just so pretty.

[IMG][/IMG]

As far as the serial number goes, that was the first thing I did after taking pictures before the sun went down. It is N1E5290. 1981 built 9th or 10th week of the year #5290. Right? And I think you are right that nothing needs to be replaced except the pedals and the saddle. We will take it down to the frame and clean her up nice. Actually, I will do the cleaning and he will do the putting back together. We will post cleaned up pics in the before and after section when we are done. Thanks for all the nice comments, now I need to get my neighbor to part with the Miyata for a good price.

Well, if you really loved your husband, you'd buy something comparable for yourself so he didn't have to look at your sub-par ride.
