Sakai Bikes
I just bought a sakai road bike and was wondering if anybody knows anything abut this brand.
It is a "Sakai Tri-Ultra"; the make is sakai not sekai and the model is kind of scratched off but I am pretty sure I have it right. I assume it is from around 1982 because it has SunTour symmetric shifters. It is made of Tange Champion #2 tubing and has a sicker mentioning " Parker Process" and "Miki Sakai". Anyway I have never seen another Sakai and didn't find much on google so I was wondering if anybody knows anything about them. thanks, Sam. |
My wife has a Sekai (with an e) 2400, purchased new in 1982. You'll find a fair amount of info on that Japanese brand, but I've never heard of Sakai with an a.

Apparently, Miki made both Sekai and Sakai frames. Sekai frames were manufactured by Miki and assembled by Sakai Export. It not uncommon for a manufacturer to produce more than one brand. The serial number format should be Myfxxxx, where y is a number designating the year and f is a letter designating the fortnight. The same serial number format shows on on some Norco and Centurion models, though it is unclear whether these frames were made by Miki or another manufacturer with the same serial number format. For instance, Merida of Taiwan uses the same format.

Thanks for the info guys.
The serial number does indeed follow that format. |
What no photos? Easthill will be devastated. :)

It's definitely a Tri-Ultra. Looks to be pre-1985 on the basis of the shifter bosses, chromed crown and lack of pump peg. What did the serial number turn out to be?

The serial is M4B07439, I guess that means second half of January 1984?

i'm glad i came across this thread as i've been going crazy trying to find information on this bicycle i have, wondering if my eyes are seeing 'a's instead of 'e's.
maybe some of you could help in further identifying and appraising this bike. it is a sakai, model, i'm not sure --- there is a decal near the front that says "relay". serial #: M5B05920 picture: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3587/...eabc55.jpg?v=0 thanks! |
I had a touring bike by them at one time, it was a very nicely made machine.

Hi to All,
Yes, I'm definitely lucky to find this thread:). I have a MIKI SAKAI bike that was bought new in 1981, that makes this bike 28+ years old! Only recently I took interest to find more information about it. It didn't come with a head-badge so it becomes difficult to trace. I have 2 stickers on the center-pillar (Seat-stem); "Parker Process, MIKI SAKAI, Made in Japan" & "CHAMPION No.2, CHROME MOLYBDEN STEEL, BUTTED TUBES, Tange Industries Ltd." The bike is Metallic Black in colour with some chromed parts exposed. I observed that the whole bike is actually chromed; from areas with paint chip-offs underside is still shiny. I am still not sure which model is mine, even after looking at the countless websites' photos. Perhaps it has close resemblance to the SEKAI 4000 model. My MIKI SAKAI have an all SHIMANO Dura-Ace Aero parts on it. It had remained 'stock' condition as it has since 1981. Even till now, it still provides me with the same nice smooth ride like it used to. Frame S/no.: M1A00409 Could anyone tell me which model is this bike? Thanks |
