Help me understand my British Ranger from Chicago

Hello everyone:

I'm trying to get a handle on my latest flea market find. It's a Ranger three-speed with plenty of mentions of both Chicago and England. The date code on the S-A hub is 61. Some of the decals are rubbed away, but still clearly visible are "Made in England" and "Genuine English Light Weight." I'm pretty sure the rear rack is a later addition. It has John Bull brake pads.

Anyone have any idea about the quality of this bike or who made it? I love the patina of the paint. My plan is to clean it up for commuting. Was this a good bike or a cheap import? All the Ranger material I've found on the Internet so far referenced mostly prewar balloon tire bikes. Any opinions would be appreciated.

I haven't heard of that brand, but perhaps it's what Meade Rangers morphed into by the early 60s? That might explain the Chicago and England connection. Cool headbadge, at any rate.

I have had 3 or 4 of these and I think I recall deciding they were made by Phillips. Not sure who owned the Ranger name at that point. All the ones I have had have been black or red.I have seen one which was the common mead ranger brown and tan.

I've seen several pre-Raleigh Hercules with that fork crown.

So I've got my hands on a Hercullips! :)

Seriously, thanks for the guidance. This is my first entree into the murky world of re-branded bikes. Or maybe it's not, since my 199? Schwinn Mesa Runner MTB is likely a Giant. At least my Peugeot is a Peugeot.

I'm starting the cleaning process next weekend. I'll post the after photos if anyone is interested.

I remember seeing Rangers like yours. I think Marshall Fields may have sold them, hence the Chicago connection.
