Miyata serial number database?

I recently bought a Miyata 3 speed that I believe is a 60s model. Can anyone tell me how to determine the year by the serial #? It is:

The license # on the seat tube is 72488:

The seller confirmed that it was manufactured and sold in Japan and then taken to the US at some point.

Another question: what is the best way to remove rust? I have a product called The Must for Rust from the hardware store, which got some of it off. But the rust on the chain guard is proving tenacious.

Thanks in advance.

Try some Oxalic Acid (Wood Bleach) on your rust. Do a search and you will see some before nad after shots from those that have used it. I picked some up (powder form) at my local Sherwin Williams paint store. Can also get it at a pharmacy, but more expensive.
