old schwinn wheels - no cone locknut?

1 Attachment(s)
I'm trying to overhaul the front wheel hub of a 60s Schwinn Racer (S6 wheel), and I'm ready to adjust the cones, but no locknuts!

Am I just supposed to adjust cones then mount it in the fork and hope for the best?

The cone adjusters look like this (see attached)

Thanks!

Yes. The proper procedure for these hubs is to screw one of the cones onto the axle until approximately 1 inch of axle threaded surface is exposed, then guide the hub assembly over the axle until resting on the cone. Then thread the other cone onto the axle using 5/8" cone wrench until seated, and back off approximately 1/8 turn. After the wheel has been mounted there should be just a trace of side play at the wheel rim. Readjust the cones if necessary. Also, if necessary, center the hub on the axle so that the same length of threaded axle shows beyond the cones on both ends.

I think you also need one 'cone lockwasher' or/aka 'cone keeper'. I bought a bag several years ago & if I could find them now, I'd offer to send you one. It has two ears for the wrench lands of the right cone, and a third ear that rides in the dropout. No threads. The left cone is left bare since the forward rotation tends to loosen it. Will keep a lookout & let you know. Searched ebay & the web but no luck. You could instead use locknuts as found on the later bikes, no?
