Not sure without a number but it is '84 or older based on the decals and head badge.

Looks great. I'm looking at the crank picture and it occurs to me that one of my bikes has a similar arrangement, and then makes me wonder what this arrangement is called (there really isn't a bcd) and how on earth I'm going to ever get new chainwheels for it.

It should take it. I switched a 5sp freewheel to a 7sp without any problem at all. It should have about 126mm spread now.

WooHoo! Seven sounds a lot better than 5 in my non fit, air sucking, hill fearing state.

The Sport 1000 currently is carrying a Shimano 500 grouppo, save for Tourney crank.

Serial No. appears to be 8B13293. Intersingly, the number is located on the non rear derailleur side drop.

I will have them in the next couple of days. She still needs some spa time before she comes out into the world.

I wanna ride it!:D

Do you know if they will accept a 6 sp cog without cold setting?

I can confirm that. I got a sport 1000, dated to 1985, for $20 at Goodwill, with a six-speed cog on the back. Since the bike was way too big for me, I swapped the alloy wheels to my Fuji and donated the Panasonic to my LFBC. It was a nice machine, though-if I were over 6-feet tall I would likely have kept it:

Good score on a nice ride!

It is silver with three color accent splashes?

I don't recall what Panasonic did for the lower model frames in '88

My '88 DX-5000

Actually, it is very similar to "Ice Blue" solid color, with the lower fork arms being chrome. The general appearance of the components, the 5 sp cog, and plain finish makes me think this may be a 78, rather than an 88.

I need to get the date code off of the Shimano stuff. I don't know my components well enough, but I had thought that the Shimano 500 stuff was no longer around in 88, and the Tourney crank is a head scratcher, with brakes, shifters, FD, and RD being 500.

The quality of finish does not appear to be as well done as the 80's examples I have seen posted either.

Is there a number under your bottom bracket as well?

It's not an 88. It has to be more like an 81 based on the parts. Very nice bike for $40! The fact that it has quick reless skewers front & Rear means it is NOT bottom of the line. The DX 2000 was the bottom of the "racing" line. I suspect it was just below that in quality. Panasonics were great values!
Side note: My first job was at a Bike shop that sold Panasonic bicycles in 1982! I once had tons of Panasonic Pro-Mo stuff but i went through one of those house cleaning moods & pitched it all........
