Can you help with info on a Jazz?
 

Long story short, in my driveway there is a trailer loaded with scrap metal to be headed for the recycler tomorrow. In the trailer is a bike frame and fork. A small decal on the bike says "Jazz, by Trek". The headtube has a "JZ" emblem or decal, and the decal on the top tube says "Voltage". It appears to be a mtb.

Is this something worth salvaging? I have a need for a good utility bike, could this be it?

I've seen a Jazz before. Looked like an early X-Mart type of offering by Trek -- probably an attempt to get some low end market share. I'll guess that marque didn't last long.

My parents bought me a Jazz Latitude as my first mountain bike in 92 or so. IIRC, it was $350 at the local bike shop.

Mine was pretty low end...hi-ten steel with a cro-mo seatpost..yippie :) But let me tell you, that bike took the abuse of every after school ride for at least 4 years before it was retired. Heavily abused, jumped, mud bogged, ect...

I'm not really sure where the Voltage fell, but I think everything was probably at about the same level. If you're looking for a utility bike, give it a go!

Jazz was a 2 model low end line by Trek. From what I remember, the most expensive model was about $250. It was an OK bike and I think it was their attempt to take some sales from the low end market, below the Trek 800.

Ok, then I stand corrected. I knew it was a low hundred dollar figure in a $50 increment.

Funny you mention the Trek 800...the 830 was my next bike. I still have that frame :)

The Jazz Voltage was a lower-end bike, but also a very solid bike with good eyelets for a rack and fenders. My friend had one, and my mom had the Jazz Streetlife. Both were cheap but gave many years of service. In fact, my brother now owns them both. :D

Jazz Latitude
 

I am STILL riding my Jazz Latitude, purchased in 1993. It may have been considered "low end", but it has performed TOP-NOTCH! The only thing I've ever needed to replace are the tires! The word "cheap" is only subjective. RIDE ON!

As others have said, it would be a dandy utility bike. I have a really baggy Jazz cruiser, coaster brake only, and I’m into it about $50-60. It’s far from a lightweight but it would survive an apocalypse no problem. Ride on!
