27" components: help/referrals please!
i'm doing a couple fixed gear builds for my friends. here are my questions:
- does anybody know of a 27" rim cheaper than the nashbar one http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?c...okes%2FNipples - does anybody know of a reason to not buy that nashbar rim (they don't ride hard or frequently) - i need a white 27" threaded front fork with 9"/23cm steerer. i can't find one. - this is more for the fgss forum, but: how about lowest-end track hubs? i can't find anything that isn't already built into a wheel. thanks much, everyone. -colin |
The rim is 36 hole, and I would think that you could build almost anything 36 hole into a usable light duty wheel. They had some 27" Sun rims a little while ago for $10 ea, but those are gone.
Nashbar has a fixed gear hub for $40, but it's only 32 hole. IRO cycle has rear hubs for ~$50, but I don't know the drillings. Nomco has a 32 hole f/r set for $88. Do you have to use 27"? Sure you can't convert to 700c? cheap wheelsets available and you could probably find a fork much easier. I've run a 700c front fork on a 27" frame and never really noticed any issues, although I did have to rig (~$3) a "dropbolt" for my rear brake calipers. |
colin, I have a 27" fork with a pretty long steerer (I'll have to measure it) that's been re-sprayed silver (could be re-re-sprayed white, if you wanted). I'm sure you can find something locally, but if all else fails and you want to pay shipping: PM me.

If you search, I posted about those Nashbar rims a couple weeks back and got replies that they were fine. I doubt you'll find anything cheaper. I was told they are "very wide" by a few people but I don't know what that means exactly. In the end I chose to spend $35/rim and buy polished Sun CR-18s instead.
You should be able to run 700C rims on nearly any bike that took 27s with the caveat that you might have to change out brakes. Karl |
