stingray for $150
 

I like stingrays but am no expert. This person wants $150 for this bike - I dont remember if walmart made a red one or not....

If it were a legit 70's model wouldn't $150 be a little undervalued?

I'd do an advanced search on ebay to see what he was trying to get for it there. (ebay pic in CL ad)

Probably worth it, assuming it is legitimate.

I've been looking for a 1976 Free Spirit Three speed for some time.
And I have yet to find one under $200!

Well worth it! I moved one of my 3 speeds for $300.00 +! That bike looks to be the real thing too! new "Schwinn StingRays" have an alloy stem and dont have the classic "Electro Welds" where the top and bottom tubes meet the headtube ;) mostly none of the older parts fit the newer bike either ; ) but on the other hand it doesnt have the top tube shifter =( just the Sturmey Archer thumb shifter =( and it doesnt have the "Schwinn Slick" rear tire, but it does have the gripper rear tire! The top tube shifter was banned as a lot of kids were putting a hurtin' on the ole "family jewels" so they switched over to the thunb shifter ;) Maybe thats why its going for that price, which is still an awesome price!

When Schwinn closed their museum at the Chicago plant, it seems I remember they auctioned a '68 model for something like $65,000. I think $150 is, literally, a steal. Did you notice the rear tire is flat in the photo?

Yeah, that seems a bit odd to have an eBay photo for a CL ad. If it's legit, it would have sold for considerably more than $150.

If it is a made in USA Stingray, buy it immediately. You can flip it for more than $150 for sure.

You can sell the rear wheel for more than $150.

A Sturmey-Archer hub would suggest that the bike is the real article. It doesn't seem someone would swap an S/A hub to a repop and sell if for $150.00.

That bike could be show room new and he wouldnt get anywhere near $65,000 for it :o My bet would be more like $400.00 if he's lucky, now a Krate in perfect condition.......:love: your talking anywhere from $1,200 on up depending on the condition and model of the Krate.

It was a model from the first Sting Rays off the line.

My parents wouldn't buy me one at 13 years old because it was an outrageous $65 at the time.

Well, maybe not. I see this one's a girls's model. I had only briefly glanced at the ad earlier :(

I emailed the seller yesterday and asked if it was still available. I also asked if it was a repro or what. Told him if it was legit then I would think he could probly get more money for it - but also said if all he wants is $150 then I would be glad to take it off his hands :)

It was $16,100 and that was the One Millionth Schwinn (first time they had hit that number in a single year's production). There is some talk that that was not the real bike, that the museum curator "sold" it prior to auction and it's floating around Chicago somewhere ... :rolleyes:

This bike was bought by the Crown Forklift Corp. of Ohio and it is now in the Bicycle Museum of America with many of the other pieces from that auction.

Guess the '76 is later in production then the musclebike fellows care for - they have their own meshuggana criteria for what details are desirable and what isn't. Guess this one didn't turn them on (particularly if it is still on the local C-List).
