cottered conversion questions..

Hello -
Question: Do I have to replace the entire cotterless BB set in an old Raleigh frame I found with a completely new BB set up if I want to covert to a cottered crankset? If so, how do I do this properly? The cotterless crankset is from a 1978 Raleigh Superbe 3 speed (which I don't yet have spindle or cotters for).

and pics of my frame from a previous BF thread: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=436282
I've been looking around for info but am very lost on this one!

Thanks for the help!

Alex

can it be so easy as finding the right size cottered spindle (just replace the spindle?) and how do I dtermine what the right size(s) is/are?

I'm confused, That is not a cottered crank. That is a standard square taper BB spindle. All you need is new crank arms. Unless you want to convert to a cottered BB.....

Supergymnast is asking about converting from a cotterless crank to cottered.

no. the link above is to my frame which does have a cotterless bb w/ spindle. I want to put this(see link below) crankset on the frame:

Thank you dirtdrop - exactly.

1st that isn't a Raleigh cotterless crankset. it is from a 2nd tier raleigh made bike(phillips, triumph, bsa). when I converted my cottered to a cotterless I just replacesd the spindle. maybe I got lucky but I think you should be able to do the same just backwards. why you want to do this I don't know.........

I just removed the spindle from the frame - across the middle of spindle it says:
Japan
5NB
Cr-Mo
84 -B

On the plastic sleeve insert it says SUGINO

Ha! I laugh because dirtdrop contributed to my previous thread.. we all spent a good amount of time trying to I.D. that frame. It's definatley a Raleigh based on headbadge holes... but the bb and headset... ??? and the exact year and model??

So I would need to figure out the the proper size of a new cottered spindle - maybe I should bring this in to my LBS?

am I really that nuts for wanting to go cottered? The crankset I want I like, and it was made for a raleigh three speed and has the raleigh crest stamped on the arms...plus 46t is what I need and if I ever wanted to go single speed for a spell 46t is perfect for me.

I hope I get lucky too.
