Lightest NON-carbon wheelset ?
Hey guys!
To your knowledge, what is the lightest non-carbon (preferrably vintage) wheelset out there? I'm looking for readily-made sets rather than rims/spokes/hubs data. Thanks very much! Also, the best bottom bracket on the planet? (for JIS, Campy, Italian thread). Buy the best I mean the combination of the bearing-quality, strength, durability and lightweight. So far I'm looking at Phil Wood or NOS C-Record. |
Boutique wheels are a non-cv invention (if we dont count Roval and 1st gen Shamals/Cosmics as CV), so all combinations of hubs, spokes and rims are possible and were common. Thats why not looking at individual components doesnt make terrible much sense to me :)
Look for some wheels with Mavic Argent 7 or OR 7 rims (265g), or Nisi Pista (227g) but bring a nipple spanner, you'll need it. lightest useable rims üpossibly are Mavic 330s. http://www.rouesartisanales.com/article-645694.html or, if you want to throw the wheels on something more vintage, look for Scheerens. |
Fiamme Ergal rims - 290 grams each
Super Champion Medaille d'Or - 260 grams each Nisi Sludi - 290 grams each Mavic Argent 7 - 260 grams each DT revolution spokes (32 each wheel) - 250 grams Brass nipples - 65 grams Hubs, this is a best guess but low flange Record/Mavic/Phil hubs with skewer would be about 500 grams for the pair. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. So you are looking at 1300-1400 grams total, not too shabby if it includes skewers. |

I have always been astonished by campy bottom brackets. They are soooo smooth, even after thousands of (maintained) miles. Of course, I'm astonished by Phils too.
Maybe I'm just easily astonished. but then again, I'm not astonished by Shimano cartridge bottom brackets after thousands of miles. Nor FSA's. matter of fact, I have a couple of hotrod OMAS bottom brackets that are, um...non-astonishing, to put it charitably. |
C-record BB. mine has done about 250,000 km since 1985, about 20-30,000 of that in single speed mode, and it's still like new. smooth and soft, and easy to maintain.
