Help Identifying a headbage
When picking up my new wheels last night, I was shown a frame that the seller could not identify.
The head badge was black, rectangular, with the side profile of a cyclist climbing a hill. The cyclist and horizon of the hill were both in gold. I have searched velobase.com and other sites, which has resulted in nothing similar. Some other information is that the lugs were fancy, similar to Nervex. The frame was stamped Japan near the bottom bracket with the SN stamped on the downtube. The components were mostly Shimano, I believe he said 600 series. I emailed the seller to inquire into the components. Any help in identifying the brand would be appreciated. I believe the plan for this bike is to sell it and know someone who is interested in purchasing. Thanks! Dan Edit* FWIW, the person who sold the bike to its current owner said that it was a JC Penny bike. The current owner asked me if I knew what it was because he didn't believe a department store bike would have the components and lugwork the bike has on it. Given my very limited knowledge of bicycles, I had no clue and decided to post here. |

That head tube decal looks like one that was on a JC Penny bike that appeared on this forum some time ago. The bike that it appeared on also looked to be surprisingly high end for a department store bike. I suggest you follow that road.

The Titlist rear derailleur dates to about 1974-75 per Berto in The Dancing Chain book. It was second to the Crane model. Frame with those lugs looks similar to a Nishiki or Centurion from that era. I agree with JCPenny as being the likely source (they used to use sports logos of that fashion), so maybe a higher end model (of JCPenny) coming from the same factories churning out similar Japanese badged bikes.
