I don't care what people think when they see me diving lol theres gold in them, I looked into one randomly and found a old road bike, but I wanted to know if anyone had a idea on what would be easyer to see inside as I ride by as I bike I pass alot of them and can't see inside it, maybe a mirror or something, I saw a few bikes in them today, i also found a Iron horse mountain bike

Unless you brought home all the bikes you saw in them today, then I have nothing but distaste for you. A real dumpster diver would have, not just a dumpster looker.

sarcasm intended

+1 When your dumpster diving for bikes you are a "bicycle lifeguard" you have to dive into that dumpster the way you would dive into the local pool to save a drowning toddler. :thumb::rolleyes:

Hey guys, I had a question. I usually do my dumpster diving by just riding around and if I see something I grab it. Is it worth diving in a few bike shop's dumpsters each week? Or is it a waste of time? If I dive at the bike stores, can I expect to see a group of biker dumpster rats also diving?

Well, for the most part, if a bike shop throws it out, then usually it's garbage. I tried it once or twice and found only trash. On the other hand, Pax139, you live near cambridge. When college gets out in the fall, dumpster dive there, it's like around where I live with Yale, it's a gold mine for people throwing stuff out that they simply "don't feel like taking home" my friend found an ipod and jars of loose change. I haven't gone yet, but i assume there'd also be bikes in there as well.

All kinds of free tires and tubes. tubes that need a single patch, and the tires that were covering said tubes. Luckily the dumpster I am describing offers a little privacy, being on the alley, to keep my honey hole secret.
Definitely look!

I hit a dumpster behind a bike shop that was going out of business last year. JEEPERS! a whole socket wrench set in the box, a half a dozen tubular 700 wheels, one of those tools for getting the kick stands out of old Schwinns. I had to make two trips.

Thats awesome! It sucks that the bike shops I've hit only have trashed stuff in their dumpsters. Oh well... Maybe someday I'll come across something good.

just stop and look and think, I am making a little trip to the dump, without all the travel.

I tried to get into the scrap yard a few days ago and they told me that as soon as it hits the ground statelaw says they have to scrap it... so I'm thinking about intercepting people at the gate and buying the bikes off of them there... heh heh heh

I've pulled complete, easily repairable bikes from seasonal bike store dumpsters. Such stores want to sell bikes. Period. End of sentence. They don't want to do complex repairs or even patch tubes, so what they throw away is choice.
The bike they took in trade to make a sale?
Dumpster.

The more-than-a-tuneup-needed older bike?
Dumpster (owner heard what the repairs would cost him, and when revived, bought a new one).

They really just want to make as many sales as possible before ski season.
