How to find out how much a bike is worth and what year it is

My boss has a couple of older bikes he's wanting to get rid of and wants me to help sell them.

I have no idea about the years of these bikes and didn't see any markings on the frame from where I could see.

The first is a Schwinn Sprint. There is a sticker on the rear near the gears that says "schw app GIANT".

The second is a Nishiki Century (or vice versus.. I don't know).

$10 - $20 in the condition the're in, and not too much more in rideable shape. Low-end mid-80's bikes.

I think the Nishiki is an '88 (or real close to that) after doing a real fast search

A Goodwill store would sell them for around $20. If a bike shop tuned them up and got them into A-1 riding condition (which would probably require new tires) they would ask $100 or so...after being tuned up, both are better bikes than the $100 new bikes at Wal-Mart.

...provided the aluminum stems and seatposts are not bonded to the frame for lack of grease.

Tune up? Even with the crappy pictures I can see they need more than just a tune up. They need to be completely stripped down to their frames and rebuilt.

Those bikes are hours of labor and several $$ away from a selling price of $100.

And unless you are willing to work for free on the boss's bikes, I would let them go in the $25 to $50 range, depending where you live, or just donate them to Goodwill.

I personally would just donate them.

Put them on Craigslist for $800. Astute readers of this forum will then post them in "Numbskull of the Day" with comments such as "This goofus is selling it for ten times what it's worth". Then $800/10 = $80 actual value.

I'd probably ask this guy what they're worth:

Yeah the pics were quick camera phone shots since I was at work when I took them.

Thanks for the input. I'll just tell him to donate them as a tax writeoff.
